Hi guys! I'm kind of excited to have joined the drop! Can't wait for my first pair of Senns to arrive! :D Quick question : How is the sub bass on these? And by that I mean, is there any? Not expecting much in that area from an open back, but I'm used to closed cans and am curious how they will stack up against my AT MSR7.

tolis626The MSR7 are more shouty and a little too forward in my opinion. Also the bass is not pronounced and deep like the 58X. The 58X have good highs and mids without overdoing. If you want more highs just take off the foam from the external part of the cups. The MSR7 I only use them sometime when going on a bus or train but not even that much as they have being replaced by the semi-closed back MDR SONY Z7. The HD 58X has much better overall tonality compared to the MSR7 and just as easier to drive.

HIFI778First off, thank you for the reply! The insight is much appreciated! Now, I failed to mention that my MSR7 is slightly modded and sounds quite far from stock. I'm using Brainwavz sheepskin pads on them and have slightly modified them internally (like, really slightly) because I couldn't use them with the stock pads for more than an hour, but they sounded like absolute crap with just a pad change. If you're interested, the mod is easy to do, reversible and well worth the effort. You can find my post here (https://www.head-fi.org/threads/the-mod-collective-bring-all-your-full-sized-headphone-mods-here.867426/page-13#post-14446717) for more details on what to do and how. A tl;dr of the results is that it makes the MSR7 a MUCH better can. Comfort is vastly improved, the mids are slightly more laid back, smoother mainly, the highs retain their detail and sparkle but don't ever get sibilant like the stock MSR7 (although I think that's an improvement that came after burning them in, not modding them) and the bass... Oh the bass. The MSR7's anaemic bass becomes some of the most balanced bass I've heard in a closed can. Just the right amount (which is like 50% more than the stock MSR7 when you factor that they finally have a REAL sub bass response), tight, fast, precise and appears just when called for. Or you can EQ them to make them monstrous bass cannons if that's your thing, but they don't need it like they did stock (and I hate EQing). Soundstage is just wide enough that imaging isn't really compormised. It's not the greatest, but it's just balanced between both of them and it's great. If I sound like I'm in love with these things, it's because I am. :D But, as good as they are, they are a pair of closed back portable cans. I can use them at home all day no problem, but the 58x will probably be better suited for use at home. The way you described them, the sound signature is probably not too far off from what I want, if not exactly what I want, so I'm happy with my purchase for now. Thanks a lot mate!

tolis626You will not be disappointed. These 58X are good with every genre and every Amp I use them with and I have 8. Sometime I carry them around with me because they sound so good and open but often I forgot they leak sound and people look at me strange then remember to lower the volume. I purchased a pair of HD598 close back now to see if they are similar as I love the 58X that much. I will pick them up only in november from Japan when I will go there. I am in Australia and I guess you too from the "mate" and it took nearly 3.5 weeks to arrive as it get stuck in germany and not gst or duty taxes when arrived here. Thanks for the tip on modding the MSR7 I may do it one day.

HIFI778Hahahahaha, no, I'm not from Australia. I'm actually from Greece. I've just picked up calling people "mate" along the way, especially when writing. Although now that I think of it, there's other stuff I'm used to saying that can be misinterpreted like this. As for the 58x, glad to hear everything you had to say. As, for now, my only amp is a Fiio Q1, it's not like I can get cans that require a lot of power without then spending more on the amp. I was eyeing either a pair of Fostex T60rp or Argon MK3, but these would cost me roughly double what the 58x cost, which is money I can't lightly spend right now, and I would also have to get a beefy amp to get them to sound right. The potential for the 58x to sound great through my little Fiio until I can upgrade that excites me! I'd still get them if that wasn't the case, but it's even better this way. As for the MSR7, do try the mod. It takes 10 minutes after you get the pads (don't try with stock pads, not great results with those) and the sound is magnificent. Stock, I found them quite good for what they tried to be, portable, closed, easy to drive, detailed. But they had their problems. Modded though? They are the best closed cans I've heard up to the EL8. Granted, it's not like I've heard everything out there, but it kicks some serious ass and I didn't know these things had it in them. That's what the MSR7 should've been stock, IMO, not to mention the M50x and such.

tolis626AHAHAH I am Italian but living in Australia. I also bought the Fostex TP50rp MK3 with balanced modification but again they are in Japan and will pick them up in november. I buy everything from Japan because it cost half the price of the rest of the world and less if second hand... but the Japanese are soo good in keeping things like new condition even after 20 years of use. I just bought also a ATH W5000 there for like 200 Euro and it is like new. Amazing deal. If you want to know a huge secret about a monster AMP that will make explode your home speakers and any headphones is to find an Audiotecnica AMP called AT-SA55G. New was 500USD but I paid only 40 USD second Hand in Japan. What is special about that AMP is that gives full 35Watts to the headphone output so with my 6XX for example I can only increase the volume until level 4 out of 10 and the quality of sound is bloody outstanding. It is completely made in Japan with Japanese components and it beats in quality many thousands of dollars AMP like the new Sony TA-ZH1ES and some other. I did a direct comparison in Japan and the quality and volume output of the SA55G was above everything else. I use it to drive my ELAC Unify UB5 which are 4 ohms and insanely power hungry without a issue. They get loud as hell and the details coming out from them left all my friends speechless. I have 4 amps some SA50 and some SA55 but they are both good with an edge for the 55 that seems more powerful. The only issue is that those Amps are made for Japan so accept only 110V but I bough a 20USD step down transformer and solved the issue. This Amp if you can find one near you or with cheap postage second hand will be the only AMP you will ever need hands down with 50 Eur max. All my friends that cares about music wants this AMP so badly and asking constantly to find one for them. Also it has bass and treble adjustments which I use all the time to bump up highs a notch in classical music and Jazz or with too warm vocal pieces turn it down... It is the best Amp I ever listened to and I listened to quite few... Edit: I am using a laptop base FAN to cool it down as it gets quite hot with the ELAC. Cooled down not problems at all.... I am waiting for an 18cm silent fan. The Elac Unify UB5 by the way are the best speakers I heard for 500USD. They guaranteed punch well above their cost..... I simply love them.

HIFI778Italian, huh? Buongiorno neighbor! :D
On to the matter at hand, that's one beefy amp. These speaker amps that can also work well as headphone amps are a rare thing these days. Most are either not clean enough for headphones or, if they even have a headphone out, don't even output their full power to it. The only way you can get most speaker amps to work with headphones is by making a custom banana plug to 6.35" jack cable or buy a converter box, but even these aren't perfect. The custom ones need a lot of caution to not mess things up and the converter boxes are expensive AF. Maybe I'll look into that butt ugly mofo of an amp (let's face it, it's oogly :P) one day, but for now I need a proper headphone amp and DAC that I can comfortably fit on my desk. You know, a basic good setup. After that, I'll wait for money to come my way and it's off to the races. Fostex t60rp, especially if ModHouse has a modded version by then, and a beefier amp are first on my list of stupid buys. Then I can go truly crazy.
PS : Please don't plug the MSR7 into that thing. You'll probably go deaf the moment you move the volume knob!
