I purchased the Sennheiser HD 6xx, Hifiman HE4xx and now the HD 58X's. I preferred the HE4xx's bass over the loss of clarity I got from the 6xx's. The HE 4xx's just sound a little more musical and to my ears more pleasant to listen to. After I got the 58X's I got the best of both worlds. The HE4xx and the 58X sound almost identical in the bass department. The mids and the highs are noticeable cleaner though on the 58X's. Time to retire the HE4xx.
I also tried the removing the foam mod. It made the highs way to harsh to my ears, but made it sound a little more "open". There also was not much loss in bass which surprised me. In the end I put the foam back in to tame the highs.

OMG! Thank you for review! Im still waiting for shipping, but I was banging my head more than a month over HD options or HE's planars. I kept reaching to Josh Valour, metal571 and others. They helped a bit, but you get the crown. Reason I didn't went with 4xx is their power ratings. In someones review I got that they do need a capable amp as well as awesome dac, since these are unforgiving. Also, most headphones need about 20 to 50 hours of burn in period. Since all reviewers said prettymuch that highs are smooth on 58x and not fatiguing, I hope yours get that umph.

I got my 58X's today and am loving them so far. In early testing I am not hearing a tremendous difference from my HE 4xx's, but I just started listening to the 58X. I actually prefer the thumpiness (is that a word?) of the 58X and they seem easier to drive, but I found the 4xx's to have a little better clarity overall (not a significant difference). Overall, I am glad I have both and will continue to let each of them get some more hours on them before I make any further judgements.

They are very similar. I’m using Flac files with a schiit Modi 2 Uber and a Liquid Carbon X Amp. Adjusting for volume, as I switch between the two, I really hear the difference in the mid range. The 58X has greater emphasis and is overall more forward soundIng. In contrast the 4xx starts to sound more V shaped, but again we are not talking about a huge difference. I just prefer the music closer sounding to the ear. I just wish the 58X had the Hifiman’s headband. I love the oval ear shaped cups, but the band feels uncomfortable on my head. I always know its there. I know this won’t be a problem for everyone but wanted to note it.
