I just got mine today,
Are they suppose to mainly sound like all the instruments are to my sides and behind me? I have the headphones on with the back of the inner ear muffs touching the back of my ears. I tested different placements and on various songs from my iphone, laptop and desktop. All have the same sound coming from the rear effect.

I would say that's pretty normal. Sennheisers and open cans in general create a wider sound stage. Vocals are usually center. Instruments to the sides and back. It's kind of like sitting in a room with music rather than sitting in front of a stage. If you don't like them, I'll buy them :)

The only open backs i've ever owned are the m1060 and the X2's, The sound stage on those sounded like I was in the middle of the performance. These make it sound like im up front and have my back to the performance.
I don't hate it, but Im not much of a fan. ill give it a few more days lol

This is not meant to be insulting, but do you have them on the right ears? I have, hmmmm... never made that mistake, but it can have that affect.
