Almost perfect in ever way. Comfortable, natural, very good extension.
DRIVE IT WITH AN IPHONE, LIKE THE CLAIM SAYS And...
In the first day i tried the Jubilee with my Iphone 8 and my ipad 2018. These are my initial impressions.
Everybody says that the "veil" is gone, but also the good ringing of female voice. This the safer way of tuning headphones.
Bass: north of neutral, extended, textured and solid, but too much in quantity in relation to mids.
Mids: male voices are smooth, warm and a little "compressed", like the eventual pickiness of the human voice is smoothered down. female voice are a little laid back like the shrill and the overtone never existed, every voice is more Diana Krall now, Maybe the bass swallow a little bit the voices.
Highs: like silk, not extremely accurate but also inoffensive. Transient are almost good. It's not the best heaphone for dynamics.
It's easy to listen, easy to drive, easy to buy. But no, it's not hifi. So for the price it's unbeatable, but it's consumer oriented mid fi. It make feel audiophile when you aren't, ugly voices become wonderful, bad recordings are now not so bad. When you go to theatre for a good comedian, you feels satisfied, the show is good but it's not shakespeare (Yes, I know that sometimes shakespeare is too much). Detail is there but avoiding the cacophony, the hp tends to be a little bit "generic" in a pleasant way. Perfect for relaxation, it's easy to get sleep, but obviously i'd never mix or study with these brcause of the blurred lines.
ONCE IN MY HOUSE I TRIED SONETHING DIFFERENT
Make you a favor: plug it in a good amp or even a MacBook pro, it can make a LOT of difference. A 100 bucks external dac amp radically changed my opinion. Everything sound crispier, alive, cohesive. The female voice came out. Ah, what a good surprise!!! the bass is now much more controlled, the recession in the mids is gone, there isn't any veil or "generic" sensation. the dynamics are complete now. I feel these now on par with a well amped K712 Pro, but the fun factor is better. And the voices, before sparse and swallowed by the bass, are now in the center of the mix, and listening to Chris Cornell is really differento from the smooth experience Josh Groban can give to the listener. It's not a microdetailed sound like a fatiguing hi end pair of hp can, but very realistic, Smooth and "human".
So: if your plan is to trust the claim "it can be driven by a smartphone" prepare yourself to a mediocre experience. But a MacBook pro 2011 or a good listening device like my Rode AI-1, can really make sing the Jubilee. And yes, mixing with these isn't an heresy.
edit: i made the solderdude mod. Now the jubilee is just the best bargain in audio equipmet EVER MADE. from good mids to incredible. The mod tames the bass by 3-4 db, making every other frequency be free from the excess of movement of the mebrane. Now everything is dead flat, but the dynamics are still excellent. There is more space and blackness between the instruments and singers have their tones more coherent with the perceived distance. As result the soundstage has more depht and height and similar width. Placement and holographic image is really improved.
