I was impressed by these much more than I thought I would be. I was expecting a decrease in resolution and quality from the HD600/650. However, that is not the case here, as they still have detail but in a different sound signature. I will say the midrange is not as forward and the overall sound signature is slightly V shaped compared to the 600 series. That is, there is more bass and upper treble. The sub bass really impressed me, as it actually extends pretty far down. I think the sub bass is the highlight of this headphone. While the mids are slightly recessed, the soundstage and imaging are improved over the 600 and 650 to my ears. I can actually hear accurate positioning. The 58X sounds more like speakers to me than headphones thanks to the increased soundstage. I do not have the 600s to directly compare, but I have used them for years so I know what they sound like. The 600s comparatively have a more up front accurate sound, and have a more natural timbre. However, the sub bass is not as extended as the 58X. I also remember the 660S sounding very similar to the 58X, but the 660S had less bass and even more treble than the 58X. I think the 58X are a great compliment to the 600 or 650, since they do many things differently and have better imaging. I would give these 4 1/2 stars if there was an option for it, since I am not entirely sure about the weird glossy/matte mismatch of the outside plastic parts, but I guess they had to cut costs somewhere.
