Are these worth upgrading to over the HD 558's? I'd assume the answer is yes, just wondering what type of difference i will notice when gaming/listening to music. I'm not much of an audiophile but these seem too good not to pick up.
You will enjoy better everything with the HD58x except maybe the width of imaging. The only other advantage of the HD558 is the lower impedance factor. But the 150 ohm of the HD58X is manageable woth most 1V output portable units such as the iPads and iPhones. I do not own Android devices but as long as they provide 1V (or close to 1V, like 0.9V) under 150 ohms everything will be fine. Yes the HD58X may benefit of higher voltage than 1V in optimal conditions and with higher sound volume, but for casual moderate to louder than moderate volume levels the HD58X will be correctly driven by most 1V portable units. Moreover, The HD58X has better everything else you may imagine: more extended amd tighter bass/sub bass, better depth, better mids, better more balanced upper mids and treble, more balanced overall sound, more musicality. I would hesite no more than 1 second to upgrade if you have the opportunity and the cash. Comparison between the HD650/6xx and HD58X is more nuanced, with pros and cons to each (I personally prefer the HD6XX in most cases but recognize the pluses of the HD58X in some situations, like for portable usage or for music with a lot of sub bass). But the comparison between the HD558 (or 598 by the way) and the HD58X is clearly more day and night in my opinion, in favor of the HD58X oubviously, no contest possible here.
Thanks for the in-depth reply. I already went ahead and got me a pair. Looking forward to them. Cheers.
