I tried these out on a few different sources, direct from MP3 player, Schiit Jotunheim, Magni3+Modi2 Uber and Bottlehead crack + Modi 2 Uber. I used Sennheiser 6XX and 599 as comparison. I found that these did not sound too great fed direct by my mp3 player and likely require an amp for best sound, also the Bottlehead crack introduced some muddy base (as expected due to impedence mismatch). Best sound was obtained from the Schiit Jotunheim which in this case sounded better than the Magni 3 (smoothed out base) The 58X gave a surprisingly detailed sound, very comfortable (shared with 6xx), base is indeed boosted over the 6XX and the treble is less rolled off. Unfortunately, the changes in my opinion are not for the better. The 6XX is very versatile, and plays all music well, even if sometimes a little boring / laid back (electronic and heavy metal ?). Conversely the 58X is a bit of a one trick pony, I did find that the 58X was really good with 90's rock / alternative music however it looses the great sound on classical, jazz, piano, and is still too laid back to excel at electronic and metal. For $50 more the 6XX is a much more versatile set of headphones (6XX), for certain styles of music (bass / treble focus) I belive your money would be better spend on a different brand (grado / beyer)

How do you compare 58x to 599? Recently got the latter for 95$ and I'm considering 58x but I don't know if it's worth the extra cash?
