My main listening experience is through reasonably high quality HiFi equipment using LPs, CDs and FLAC or WAV Files. I mainly listen to rock, blues and jazz, and have acquired numerous cans over the years including numerous HD models, current favourite which is the HD650, Musical Fidelity 100 and 200, refurbished electrostatic Micro Seiki MX 1 which I have owned since the mid 1970s and are still awesome for clarity, space and speed, but lack any deep bass. i find that no set covers every musicall genre, volume level, or listening environment, hence the numerous sets of cans I have (OCD 😱) I have also tried various AKG versions of the 7 series but they never quite cut the mustard for me and always sound too sterile/analytical. Source and the links in the chain are vital for the best sound quality. Whilst a phone or the soundcard on a computer should drive them, to hear what they are really capable of feed then an uncompressed file through a combined DAC and headphone amp or two separate units and you will be amazed at the difference. I use a fairly inexpensive musical fidelity headphone and DAC amp with my laptop and it is pretty good. For my serious listening I have different headphone amps including OTL tube ones. The different cans I have work best with certain combinations of these, and the DACs when I play high res WAV or FLAC files. cant wait to hear the 58x as I also have access to the HD660 which it seems to share a good few design features with, including a lower 150 ohm impedance which will make it far easier to drive from one of my favourite but very low power headphone amp. it is also possible that my phone might be able to drive them, but as they are open back probably not much use in anything other than a quiet environment. will give a full update once they arrive and have been worked into my system

OldGitHallo Old Git, I came across your post whilst searching for info about the headfones mpx1 electrostatic. I own a set from the late sevenies and listened with great pleasure for years. I recently came across them as they have been gathering dust and was wondering if I could use them with a modern 5 speaker Yamaha receiver (I only use the 2 stereo speaker outputs anyway.) As I am no tech wizard I would appreciate your input from one old git to another! Cheers John Coxon
