GeneralLienthe dt 990 pro (80 ohm) does not necessarily require an amp. If i go for the hd 58x do i really need an amp?

ShaickIf you're not planning on getting an amp or a DAC, you're defeating the purpose of owning professional headphones. I suggest a pair of Creative Aurvana Live!/E-MU Purpleheart or something else that souds great without requiring an amp, like Koss Porta Pros. You can eat cold pizza and like it, and it doesn't necessarily require heating for you to consume it, but a fresh (or heated) pizza will subjectively taste better and have superior mouthfeel. Same with amps and these high-impedance headphones: it's the proper way to experience their benefits and superiority. =)

raansire7Thank you. Could you suggest some reasonable priced amp/dac?

ShaickIf you want to get your feet wet without spending a lot, I've owned a Cambridge Audio DacMagic XS V2 and really liked it. I gifted it away to a friend since I have more stuff, but I've been wanting to get another one. https://www.amazon.com/Cambridge-DacMagic-Gold-USB-Headphone/dp/B015JESYV8 It's only $75 and it's the bare minimum I'd recommend. It has way more power and a better sound than stock headphone outputs. You can really hear into the music with it.

raansire7What about the FiiO Q1 mark II or the FiiO K3? Are they alright to pair with the 6xx or 58x?

ShaickI haven't tried those, so I wouldn't know. Only portable DAC/amp I've used with both the 6XX and 58X is the H2 Designs MIYO, and that thing makes them sing because of its good guts inside. It's my bed-side play thing for when I go to sleep, since I plug it straight to my smartphone and power it from it. I did use them with my LG V35 and G8 that have the ES9218P SoC, but although they get plenty loud and sound great fidelity-wise, they don't sound their best dynamics-wise to be honest. The more power, the bigger and better those two sound. The difference is huge. With an Asgard 2, they are tear-inducingly sweet in their sound presentation. Portables can sound impressively good quality-wise but the audio space where the music sounds is not as big, akin to watching a movie in a smaller screen. Plus, listening to good headphones anywhere other than a controlled environment with a beefy DAC and amp in my opinion defeats their purpose. The whole point is to be in a quiet place to appreciate the extra details and realism in the music that higher-end equipment allows versus average consumer equipment. God bless. Peace!

raansire7Agree with this. The point to everyone wondering if they need an amp for 58Xs or 6XXs is; if you can't run with the big dogs, you'll end up pissing with the puppies, i.e. get the right Hi-Fi equipment to drive Hi-Fi headphones and stop playing around / nickel and diming around the issue. Otherwise just stick with the kids toys / gimmick USB gaming headsets lol

LuckyLuke575Hahaha. I chuckled when I read your comment. I've never heard or read the puppies part before. Too funny! While it would seem harsh, I really think it needs to be said. Guys nickle and dime too much here. I say they need to save the money and savor the complete experience, not a half-baked one! Peeps, while I wouldn't get a lot of the audiophile stuff that drops here not because it's bad but because it doesn't check my particular marks, I do acknowledge that the trifecta of equipment needed for a proper audiophile experience is sold here at Drop and available for sale most of the time. I mean, they sell the HD 650 for $220 brand new ($200 in the beginning). Look at the box's barcode if you doubt the 6XX are real-deal HD 650. No need for going down the audiophilia nervosa rabbit hole. You can buy one of the most iconic headphones in history...to a lot of people THE most, for less than the cost of Beats headphones that have metal weights inside to make them feel more substantial. I understand a lot of people here are college (or unemployed) kids, but it's a bit irksome how they stubbornly reject the advice of the older guys who have more experience with this stuff and want to save them time and money. Good headphones need good DACs and amps. That can't be avoided no matter how much mental finessing is applied like I see applied here on the comments section, he-he.

ShaickI have the FiiO Q1 Mk II and 6XX; it drives them well, and especially well with the 2.5 mm balanced output.

raansire7I lol'd at the audiophilia nervosa statement haha It's a great term that explains a lot that goes on in the audio community. Ultimately there's a certain great audio setup that you want to aim at for the money, and that takes research in the form reading up, watching YouTube, and most importantly going out there and listening to the equipment (and no, just watching Z reviews ranting and raving doesn't count, although he's a good intro point). But to the point of the thread here, I say to guys; enjoy the journey and discovery, but also plan for a complete audio setup that will give you Hi-Fi sound. Pro tip for an all in one best solution; Topping DX3 Pro and HD 6XX or 58X. Technically and practically that is the only equipment you'll ever need; excellent sound quality (see AudioScienceReview for detail), enough power to drive 300 ohms easily, remote, BT, optical, USB and coaxial inputs, screen, RCA outs, the works.
