I got zebrawood as wanted a 'neutral' tone wood that was fairly dense and hard also like the look of zebrawood. Get a little more spacious sound with them and a little more bass, sounds pretty much the same otherwise. Yes they isolate mucy better and leak out much less than stock... truly closed back and I used Blu-Tack to seal the cups to the frame... Also using Yaxi Alcantara hybrid HD650 pads which darken the sound, bring out the low end more, and make it a little more full bodied - and are much more comfortable.

For anyone else considering this, try cupping your hands over the 58X when you're using them, and listen to what that does to the sound.

NotABotIt's just slightly more spacious, but yes. The Yaxi pads add more to the sense of space than the wood cups.

VRacer111OMG, whoever see this DO NOT buy any stupid cups to cover the back of these headphones!!!!! These are designed to be OPEN BACK headphones. If you want closed back headphones, then there are other options to choose from e.g. Beyerdynamic 770s or Sennheiser HD 598 Cs.

LuckyLuke575I will say it does change how they sound, so if you really like the stock HD58X sound and don't want it changed quite a bit and don't like to EQ headohones - DO NOT DO THIS. But, if you don't mind EQ'ing and are looking for something akin to a TH-X00 Purpleheart but in a darker and more fatigue free sound which weighs less with better comfort - this mod is very much a great way to go about it. Reverb and echo is not much more than a TH-X00 and on the tube amp the closed-back HD58X really comes alive... the closed back modded HD58X is one of my top 3 favorite headphones I have, the other 2 being Porta Pro with Yaxi pads and the STAX L300 Limited (modded to be an L700 clone with L700 pads and headband.) This mod was also done as I NEEDED better isolation for gaming & movie usage in my living room due to A/C unit noise.
I also have a 100% stock HD58X which works equally great on the tube amp. Headphones and mods to headphones are all user preferences, but for the HD58X a tube amp with the right tube noticeably improves separation and discernment of details along with giving such a pleasing, live & full bodied sound I just wasn't getting through my Gustard 10 amps - which are not flat/reference sounding SS amps like the RME ADI-2. For the HD58X (whether stock or modded) the Project Ember gives much better separation of sound and discernment of vocals over the solid state amps I have (Gustard H10 & RME ADI-2). All the little breathes before a singer initiates their voice and intonation changes are just more easily processed/understood and brought out in a natural, non-forced way. The solid dynamic & full feeling of sound is just something I've never gotten from any SS amp, not to the degree the Ember presents.

VRacer111In my very brief experience with this (putting my hands over the cups) was so much as everything suddenly sounded muffled and closed in. I thought it sounded pretty terrible, and made me realise "oh, so this is why the best headphones tend to be open". In hindsight, it was the introduction of huge amounts of internal reflection that was messing up the sound. EQ would not have had a useful effect here.
Look at what happened with Sennheiser made a closed back 800S. They released the 820S, which has been almost universally panned. And they didn't just slap some random pair of cups bought off the internet- they had Axel Grell, the best known engineer in the entire headphone industry, work on the 820S for years.
