Before buying the 58X, I was not in way a Sennheiser fan. Most all I had experienced were to my ears veiled, congested and bloated sounding. After taking a $160.00 chance on the 58X that has changed. Truth is, if I wasn't so impressed by the HD 58X performance I'd likely never tried the 660 S. After listening with both, below are some personal observations. The Devil's in the details! The HD 58X is not veiled, but it simply doesn't have the detail retrieval of the 660 S. The bass is by comparison exaggerated on the 58X, but it is not bloated. Both perform best with a good amp. Neither of these cans become harsh with a decent recording. Some have mentioned a grainy sound, it doesn't seem to be present in either of mine. The imaging and soundstage on the 660 S seems noticeably better than on the 58X. I've twice tried the grill foam removal on the 58X and honestly can detect no notable difference. Years ago with the 500 series there was a noticeable change when removing the thicker mat inside their grill. (Either way they still sounded like hell to me) As I type this I'm listening with the 58X and enjoying it immensely. I don't own anything below $300.00 that I enjoy as much as the 58X. The build quality is I believe equal. Other than the obvious grill logo and shiny headband from a distance they look pretty much like the same cans. Is the HD 660 S better at clearly delivering the majority of what I listen to? Yes. Is the HD 660 S worth 3 times the 58X cost? For many if not most, probably not. I like the 660 S performance enough for "me" to justify the difference in cost. I did wait till I found them discounted to nearer $400.00 before purchasing. I'm still quite pleased with 58X. They are a genuine bargain! If you have a decent source, good source material to feed them and you're stuck on the bubble about buying these, at $160.00 they're a steal.

1-T-O-MI saw the 660 S go down to $396 months ago new sold by Amazon and almost pulled the trigger, but owning the 6XX and Jubilees, I felt they'd be way too in the same ballpark. I went for the AudioQuest NightHawk Carbon instead.

1-T-O-MNice feedback on your experience. I never bought the "veiled" argument. After auditioning the World Series of headphones in a single day, I realized how much stupidity and bullshitting I was reading online. Since then I can only say to people; the vast majority of stuff you read online is bullshit and exaggeration; the Golden Rule with audio equipment is to do the research to see what models and price points you're interested in, and then go out and listen to the stuff and decide from there, because there's so much contrived hogwash out there.
1-T-O-MWould love to hear what people think too as I am trying to get my first pair and not sure which way to go. Need help deciding, should I get these or the MASSDROP X SENNHEISER HD 6XX I listen mostly to, classic rock, Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd, LED Zeppelin etc, with some classical and electronic music as well. I have a Audio Technica 120usb for my turntable listening on vinyl with a monolith spark to drive my current headphones, but would like to plug into my computer, iPad or IPhone possibly at times as well. Which headphones would be better and why?

MRphotographycomI listen to exactly the same bands, also on vinyl, via a Dual 505-4!!! I have the 6XX and I'm very happy with the sound.
LuckyLuke575Thank you! I keep going back and forth between the two, really the difference in price isn’t that great and it seems overall quality and ability to grow with my listening the 6XX is the way to go, what do you use if you are traveling in a hotel and driving from your laptop, iPad or iPhone?

MRphotographycomI use a FiiO Q1 Mk II with a balanced cable for the 6XXs on the road. Topping DX3 Pro for my home setup.
LuckyLuke575Just ordered the 6XX and i will go to guitar center to grab the FiiO Q1 Mk II with a balanced cable for when I am traveling! I am using right now a Liquid Spark from Monolith by Alex Cavalli for my turntable and old headphones, you think that is good enough to power, bring out the sound and enjoy the 600x cans on?

MRphotographycomGreat stuff! You won't be disappointed; they're a great pair of headphones. The Liquid Spark is rated as 1,300 mW @ 50 ohms, which is more than enough to drive the 6XXs with, so no need to replace the amp. You might want a DAC with nice features to have hooked up to the Liquid Spark, like a Topping D50s for example would be a great option, or Topping DX7 Pro if you really wanted to upgrade the AMP and get an awesome DAC at the same time. I'd advise you to have a look at www.audiosciencereview.com, which I'm very active on. DACs and amps get measured objectively by an audio analyzer for review write ups looking at distortion, noise, channel imbalance etc , and always done by a professional (Amirm). It's a very solid site (compared to Head-Fi for example where it's just a bunch of guys mouthing off, or getting gear and then being biased etc).

LuckyLuke575Thank you so much! I am somewhat new to DAC's so I will definitely visit the site and have a look and do some research. Is there a portable DAC that works both on the road with my iPad, iPhone and MacBook and can be hooked up to the Liquid Spark when I am at home? Thanks again for all your help.

MRphotographycomNo worries, I've been in your shoes not too long ago :) The tricky part is that the Liquid Spark has RCA inputs, and the portable DAC's usually only have 2.5 mm or 3.5 mm outputs. But you can get 2.5mm/ 3.5mm to RCA cables that would work fine. So with the FiiO, it would be possible to get a cable to connect to the 2.5 mm balanced output to RCA (I found this on AliExpress, but they should be available on Amazon and eBay too).

For my setup, I have the FiiO Q1 Mk II for use at work and on the road, and a Topping DX3 Pro for home use (integrated DAC/AMP, includes remote control, screen, optical & USB inputs, pre-amp with RCA outputs to my integrated amplifier and speakers, display screen) so everything stays in place, but the above solution would be viable if you want the DAC to do double duty :)
