Hi - 58X owner and have been through a couple of mods. I haven't seen much discussion about them (other than felt mod) so wanted to share my observations and see if anyone else had similar/different/additional experiences. I started with stock being driven by my laptop sound card - sound was very uninspiring....(don't use soundcards) I added a cheap, but well-reviewed, DAC/amp dongle: xTremePro X1. I think it and Speaka are clones? It should be similar to Dragonfly Black. Big improvement in sound imaging and bass. Lately, I've been using my stereo's pre-amp h/p jack - it's better still. Next I bought a notch filter from Solderdude. It decreases response from 4 - 8kHz to soften edges. This is good, but the stock sound is not worse. I find the stock sound edgy (in a very good way) not harsh or brittle. With the notch filter, it's little softer, more blended. I actually switch back and forth on this mod. Both ways are great. Next, I applied versions of the felt mod (to the outside of magnet). It's been well-discussed online. I tried the AKG 240 foam, but found it lost too much bass. The felt mod is better and you can customize the size of the punched hole. This decreases the warmth (mid-bass) and bass. The last mod I did was the curtain mod (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dy97RiraRdA). This was a major improvement in sound too. Replacing inner foam really increased clarity and treble perception. In fact, it was too bright and occasionally piercing (e.g. flutes) for me with one layer, so I used double layer. The sound with the above mods is outstanding. I don't have other headphones to compare to. I'd love to hear from any who have both 58X and 6XX/650 who could compare them with 58X curtain mod. I've read much about the better clarity of the 6XX (and 600 too) and I wonder how the close they are with curtain mod. I've tried to A/B with and without. It takes several minutes to switch foam vs. fabric. But to me, w/the foam sounds a little fuzzy/smeared now and objectively not as good. Not everyone wants to mod, but I've seen a big increase in SQ with little effort.

bcl1234I have the 58x, the 600 and 6xx. I replaced the front foam with a more stocking like material, which is actually a recycled one from replacement earpads from Amazon. I confirm that it has opened up the treble, even the sound stage and improved its imaging. Overall better now than stock which I felt veiled and claustrophobic. I even made a post on Reddit about it. I have not done the felt mode neither did I remove the back foam because I felt it had no effect.

ChrisDanHi - thx for response. I'd like to read your reddit post, could you link to it? How do find the treble response of the the mod 58X vs. 6XX vs. 600? I was OK with 58X until I modded. I didn't find the stock sound claustrophobic, but I find it more clear and less "smeary" now. Imaging is improved for me too.

bcl1234BTW, I removed the back foam just after I responded to your post. I can't really tell because I didn't want to put it back again. But I think the detail I was talking about in my Reddit post is now closer to the HD600's. (Just the detail. Overall, closer to the 6XX with more bass). So I'm sticking to this mod, both front and back foam removed. At first, before any mods, I didn't enjoy the sound of the 58x. Now I do. A lot. Since the front foam is the same for all three, 58x, 600 and 6xx, I'm curious as to the effect of changing the front foam on the 600 and 6xx.
