The best choice for most people
After a few months trading back and forth between these and the HD6XX, I really think most people will be much happier with these. I do most of my listening to my ripped ALAC collection and/or Tidal on my iPhone through the lightning adapter. The Hd6XX are fine with this, but definitely don’t shine like they do when plugged into my desktop computer or receiver, whereas the HD58X sound pretty much the same (great) no matter what you plug them into. If you had to have just one and will do any listening through a portable source, go for these. As for actual performance, they sound like a slightly more energetic set of Sennheiser open-back headphones. Bass guitars come to life on these, and there is enough sparkle on the high end to satisfy most folks. A really great set of headphones at any price.

Would recommend to a friend.
This is a tough review to write. I know these are not 5 star headphones but every time I change it to 4 I feel like I am selling them short. I have plenty of headphones that are technically better in every single way but found myself having to listen to music I normally wouldn't in order to appreciate what they had to offer. The problem I always had was the music I like is normally poorly recorded and those headphones would just suck the fun out of most of my favorite albums. This includes the 600's and 6xx's. I'm not sure what I expected when I bought these. I've been daydreaming about the 660s and seen another 150ohm Sennheiser with the 6xx series looks for $150 and figured why not. Massdrop shipped them quick and they got here in no time despite the normally slow fedex/usps thing. I have a regular new headphone ritual where I open up foobar and play Reasonable Doubt. Normally I skip through that album in a couple minutes because those other headphones makes the poor quality samples and overall poor recording quality unbearable to listen to. I usually have to use my jbl s700's or ATH-WS1100's for old school hip hop. This is where this review may get a little weird so I apologize in advance. Now I have these on and hit play. Can't Knock the Hustle starts playing and the heart beat starts. At the 30 second mark it dawns on me I am sitting here with my eyes closed remembering when I first bought the cassette back in the day not really even listening. Then the 42sec mark hits and sitting in a room alone I actually say ooh. I sat there with my feet up and eyes closed and listened to the entire album. Not once did I have the flaws of the album forced on me or even thought to look for them. The entire time I was having memories of the first time I listened to the album and enjoyed it just as much as I did then. I know all that probably sounded weird but what I'm about to say may sound even more weird. All of my so called "audiophile" grade headphones always gave me the impression they were tuned by someone a generation older to fit the music they enjoyed when they were younger. These are the first quality pair of headphones that feel like they are tuned by someone from my generation. A lot of audiophile headphones don't seem to like hip hop or at least late 80's early 90's hip hop but these do. Everything just sounds pleasurable. My collection of music is just not hip hop and I normally have to switch headphones depending on what I want to listen to but I haven't felt the need with these. The only real shortcomings I think these headphones have is the soundstage and separation. I'm strictly speaking stock in this review because those can be improved. I find the soundstage to be very close to the 600's and separation of instruments to be a bit less or softer than both the 600's and the 6xx's. I would definitely like more soundstage stock but I think the way these do separation is part of why they work so well with all music and are so pleasurable. If your playlist goes from wu tang to rage to Biggie to Nirvana to Dessa to Wayne to you get the point these are for you. I have seen some comments of owners saying they had some graininess with theirs but I have no sign of that with mine. I did have that with those ATH-WS1100's but it went away after a week of use so hopefully those who have/had that issue with these will have the luck I had with those.

Are these better than my Beats?
That is a definitive yes. I think the only place that the beats can beat the sennheiser hd58x to is who is going to be quicker in going inside the trash can and I believe that beats will win that round hands down, no competition xD. But on a serious note, there is no way any beats model could surpass the sound quality that this can produce
Will this work with my phone?
Short answer: Yes. Long answer: They won’t sound like the $160 you paid for and you will also need to crank up the volume quite a bit.

Update June 26: The HD 58X will launch Wednesday, June 27 at 9:55 a.m. PT. There will be 1,800 units available, and they will ship in 2 to 3 business days.
Hi everyone, The first production of the Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 58X Jubilee headphones has arrived at the warehouse, and the headphones are now being prepared for shipment. This shipment includes all HD 58X drop participants, which includes members who joined from December 20187 - April 2018. We estimate that the headphones will start shipping early next week. Throughout the production process, we sent various samples to reviewers and we received positive results, as well as some constructive feedback on the sound. Some reviewers mentioned that there was too much energy in the upper mids, and not enough bass extension. We decided to take advantage of the timeline we had, and made changes to the unit as it was being produced. A process like this typically takes years, and we were able to work with Sennheiser to make these changes in just a couple of months. Ultimately, these areas of the sound were improved without any other changes to the headphones. Production is now complete and we’re excited to release the new frequency response graph:

We’d like to thank the community reviewers who helped us through the production process, and we’re looking forward to you all receiving the first production of the Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 58X Jubilee headphones! Some of you received an email from us about a delay in serialization. Unfortunately about 165 serialized headphones are delayed, and expected to arrive at our warehouse by the end of next week. We’ve emailed all of those who are affected and the two options they have. Also, we’re excited to announce that we have remaining units in our warehouse available for immediate shipment. With all the positive response around the HD 58X, we wanted to get more headphones into the hands of audio enthusiasts. We’ll be launching only 1,000 units of the HD 58X on Wednesday, June 27. These units will ship in 2 to 3 business days.
No problem!

I will try out a range of ideas. Mine are about to be delivered any day now. I am going to design and build an amp specifically for these headphones, I am going to have a lot of fun with these.

Hi all - With the positive community response around the first drop for the 58X (~1.6k units sold), we’ve been able to work with Sennheiser to begin production on those units and additional units without impacting ship time of the first drop. Because of this, will likely be able to open up a couple of limited quantity drops over the next several months. This first drop will be live at 6am PT on 2/14 with a quantity of 600 units available (the drop will be live until 2250 total units have been sold). These units are estimated to ship in July. Thanks for helping make the 58X a success!

hey sennheiser i bought the massdrop 58x and i ran the bass shaker test on https://www.audiocheck.net/soundtests_headphones.php and im clearly having parasitic noise dominantly on the left channel in the very low freq range . Im running through AC97 frontpanel connector. Is this normal behaviour of your headphone or a bad test file, or my realtek chip? (what should play as a pure bass frequency at that range bleeds over into a flirring white noise kind of thing)

Legendary Line As enthusiasts, we hope for a really great experience and value in what we buy. Consistently (for the past 26 years), Sennheiser has been providing great value with a great musical experience in the HD580, HD600, and HD650/HD6XX.  They all use the same driver design and materials. These models are community recommended “go-to” favorite headphones. Massdrop’s own version of HD650 (the HD6XX) has sold over 50,000 pairs during the past year. The only real requests for changes we see have to do with color, comfort, a “veil” to the sound perceived by some, and the amount of amplification they need to sound their best. For colorway, the new HD58X goes back to the HD580 Jubilee roots and is black with dark grey grills. For comfort, the pads do soften over time and the headband can be “massaged” by slightly bending the frame to make less clamping force. There are instructions online explaining how to do this. For amplification, these are a bit easier to drive.  Reports are coming back that these are about 4 decibels louder on portable devices like cell phones. For the “Sennheiser veil” perceived by some... New Driver Unveiling

What has not changed in the HD58X Jubilee? -Still has 38mm dynamic drivers.   -Still audiophile quality.   -Same tooling, comfort, interchangeable 600/650/6XX/660S parts in the rest of the headphone. What is different in the HD58X Jubilee? -300 ohm resistance lowered to 150 ohms.   -Voice coil material has changed, it has a lower electrical resistance. -Diaphragm shape has been revised. -Different damping scheme and acoustic baffle. These changes were made to lower impedance (easier to drive) as well as increase the top end of the frequency range.  In the “air” treble region of 12kHz-15kHz, there is better extension as compared to the HD600/650. The bass rolls off a little earlier than typical for the line as a tradeoff for lower distortion in the area. We have requested an increase to bass extension if Sennheiser can do so without any negative effects by the time of production and they have agreed. These new drivers have been characterized as clearer, faster, and more lively in presentation...without requiring specialized gear.   Audiophiles like to say that the 580/600/650/6XX “scales well” with better gear. The HD58X are designed to perform well “out of the box” with almost anything you plug them into. They're great with your laptop or phone but as with all headphones in this series, you gain a lot by adding a dedicated amplifier. This driver is closely related to the driver in the new HD660S. EDIT: Same size (both 38mm as confirmed by Sennheiser), same materials, there are some differences in the damping scheme and driver housing. This is the newest evolution for the line, another beginning deserved by the line-up that started with the HD580 25 years ago.  Add these to your collection to complement HD6XX/K7XX/HE-350 or start your journey here. Value The packaging will be simplified to reduce cost.  The 600/650/6XX come in hefty “presentation boxes” which may be piling up in your closet. After the first drop, the price will increase in future drops. The magnitude of the increase is unclear pending production of the HD58X. The Massdrop x Sennheiser HD58X Jubilee pays homage to the headphone that started it all and represents the start of the next chapter…

That makes much more sense. And now I see what dilema you have. You want the Denon (btw, awesome looking when I looked it up, the inputs are just insanely populated), to function as the AMP/DAC, but the output impedance is too high seemingly. So you want something to take care of the impedence, but those in-between devices are costly from what I've gathered? Yeah, seems quite the dilemma.

CEE_TEEI am very new to audio and been listening with cheapest earphones in the past. Now I am trying to buy a good pair of headphones but I am not sure which one I should get between HD6XX or HD58X. After reading your post, it makes me even more confused. Can you recommend me which one I should go for?

Could someone help me please? I would like to buy an amplifier priced around 150€ and i would like to know if the Schiit Vali 2 or Magni 3 will work with them

That Liquid Spark and JDS Atom might be better than the Magni 3 for the same price 1/2 year later.

JoeBiYou are correct.A lot has changed in the last 6 months. As a consumer it is great to have options! I would also add the Loxjie P20 to the list of great sub $100 amps.

Hey, are these worth getting if I already have Sennheisder HD 558s (That I still LOVE btw)?
I don’t have the insider story, but I believe the Elex is a “Drop x Focal Elear X,” shortened as “Elex” like the HD 58X, HE 4XX, and AKG K7XX. So, I would expect the Elex to be like an Elear but retuned to a sound profile requested by Drop, more similar to the Clear. Just to add, I don’t have anything against the HD 58X Jubilee. Like I said, it has more bass than the HD 600 series, and it’s quite pleasant to listen to and easy to drive. Also, pretty affordable. As we transition from isolation to hybrid downtown office/WFH, I could see the HD 58X Jubilee actually being great as a headphone to enjoy while working, even in a cubicle (with decent felt/sound dampening in the walls). Sometimes you don’t want to completely block out everything with noise cancelling headphones; just add a soundtrack to your life. 🤷‍♂️

docradmanThanks for the request! It's hard to believe that it's been almost two years since this post. The three sets of headphones in the picture are still the three that I use most often at home. I spent my 2019 budget on upgrading my floor-standing speakers for my main system, whereas in 2018 I focused more on my desktop headphone system. I use the 58X most when listening on my portable devices. It sounds the best among the three when driven by my LG V30 (phone) or A&K XB10 (portable Bluetooth DAC and amp). It's the headphone I recommend the most to my non-audiophile friends because it's the easiest to drive. I also have the Schiit Magni 3 (solid state) and DarkVoice 336SE (tube OTL) headphone amps for when I am stationary at my desk. The 58X sounds great on these two amps, as well. But when I switch to the 6XX, the music just sounds more 'right', more comfortable, and less fatiguing. I don't have golden ears, so I really can't explain it better than that. But I do prefer the 6XX over the 58X when powered by a desktop amp. But if I'm moving around, I prefer the 58X, because the 6XX doesn't sound as good when powered by my phone or XB10. The 4XX, on the other hand, also requires a desktop amp to sound its best. I've seen differing opinions on this matter, but I think it sounds great when powered by the DarkVoice 336SE. And I describe its sound as 'personal'. I can distinguish the ambient details inside and behind the music best when using the 4XX then when using the 6XX or 58X. But for long listening sessions, I would still probably go for the 6XX because its sound is the most natural to my ears among the three.

You would think that after what now 7 or 8 drops with Sennheiser and having to be the single largest volume buyer of headphones from them, probably by far, you could work on getting those lead times more manageable.

What Dac/Amp are you using with HD6xx? I'm currently savings towards ZMF Eikon, while expensive have heard they are great all round headphone and really deliver in the low end. Otherwise the Emu-Teak just got dropped again on Massdrop so they could be an option?
