Massdrop x Sorensen Shadow 28L Fast Pack

Designed by ultrarunner Aaron Sorensen, the Shadow fast pack is a comfortable, lightweight carrying solution for long-distance hiking and trail running. And like a shadow, it’s meant to stay with you all day—or all weekend—with enough room for water, layers, and gear. Made of supremely durable 210d 9.4-ounce Robic yarn, it has EVA foam shoulder straps, adjustable sternum straps, and an array of pockets. Reflective hits at the shock cords and straps improve visibility after dark, while the removable high-density polyethylene sheet adds structure without impacting comfort. 

Featuring plenty of pockets, the Shadow ensures you won’t have to leave any essentials behind. On the front, there’s a spacious stretch pocket for clothing, headlamps, and other large items. Side water-bottle pockets keep hydration within easy reach, while two small stretch pockets on the straps give you a place to store quick-access items like your phone, keys, wallet, and energy gels. Stow everything else in the main compartment, where you’ll also find a small zippered pocket with a glove hook. Finally, the backs of the shoulder straps are lined with polyester interlock mesh for added comfort. 

The main fabric of the pack is Robic yarn: a specialty yarn made from nylon and polyester that’s 25 times stronger in tear strength than nylon 6, and a bit stronger than nylon 66 as well. Plus, 500d Robic yarn tests just about point for point with 500d Cordura in fields like strength, stability, abrasion resistance, and water repellency. It’s used in workwear, CamelBak and Gregory bags, and highly durable thread. Along with giving the pack a distinctive texture and appearance, the broken-weave construction promises resilience for long-term use.

The fabric comes from Navi Mill, a South Korean mill that has specialized in nylon and polyester fabrics since 1973, providing performance fabrics to respected brands like Osprey, Marmot, The North Face, Snow Peak, Lululemon, and Peak Design. Navi weaves all of its fabrics in-house, which allows for the highest levels of customization and quality inspection. These packs are then manufactured in Vietnam by the same factory that produces many of the highly technical packs in the outdoor industry today.
