Hey everyone,
This one has been a long time coming and I’m really excited that we can finally share this with the community. Spyderco is one of the most revered brands in the knife community, and the Delica and Endura (both made in Seki, Japan) are their two most popular models.
Discussions of a Delica and/or Endura started on the Spyderco Forum a few years back, but it was decided that the cost would be prohibitive. While this version costs more than a standard version with VG-10, the size and unique nature of the Massdrop community have let us negotiate a price that is a good value, relative to the comparative prices of the steels used.
Spyderco has plenty of special editions (called “sprint runs”) over the years, but they’ve never made a knife featuring Super Gold steel until now. This steel is popular with top custom knife makers like Ken Onion because of its excellent grain structure and hardness, both of which are rare for a stainless steel. Also called SG2 or SGS2, this steel is normally found only in handmade pocket knives or high-end Japanese kitchen knives.
Normally, Spyderco knives that feature upgraded steels are paired with different colors of FRN; like ZDP-189 with British Racing Green, or HAP40 with Burnt Orange. We did want these knives to have some visible indication of the super-premium steel being used, but we also know that black is the overwhelmingly popular favorite handle color. When Spyderco showed us their new matte gold finish at Blade Show 2017, we knew that we had found a winner. The prototype that we saw had this color finish applied to the whole blade, which just seemed...a little too gold. We agreed that applying the finish to the lockbar only would be the subtle and unique way of indicating the special nature of this blade.
Thanks for checking out the drop, and for being part of an awesome community that is making this possible!

JonasHeinemanThe product description says this is a limited run of 1500 pieces, but then below that it says you are doing 500 pieces, with the option to order more (up to 1000 pieces total). Which of these numbers is accurate, the 1500 or the 1000 pieces? Thanks.
JonasHeinemanGood god man, this is some top-shelf stuff right here. Thanks for making it easy to resist buying anything else for a while. A first edition Spyderco sprint run, esp one that had long been rumored to be happening but was always put off because of the expense--amazing. I'm so in. On both models. I would suggest a limit of just one or two per customer; I expect this drop will bring a gaggle of the Spyderco fans who would be glad to buy all 1500 (they're a little...intense, shall we say).
Also, outstanding choice on the aesthetics. Personally, I find black to be rather boring and over-done on knives, but it does tend to look good, which is why people like; moreover, these knives will be valuable collector pieces from the moment they're made, so making them as broadly appealing as possible only enhances their value. And I agree: a entire blade in gold would have been too much, but the gold accent on the framelock is gorgeous.
And somehow I'll find a way to wair until Oct 31. Hopefully...
JonasHeinemanI know they're super popular knives, but I have to say I've always thought those handles look rather tacky. I'm sure it offers a good grip, but I've never liked the design of it with the little squares and oval in the middle. I know, might be an unpopular opinion, I just had to say it.
MooTatersCompletely agree, which is why I've always thought that if I decided to buy a Spyderco, aftermarket scales would have to figure into the cost of the knife. With that in mind, imo, there have always been better cost effective knife deals out there for my personal tastes. Though I have to say, this drop definitely changes that quite a bit and is REALLY tempting to me. Glad I have til Tuesday morning to think on it. lol
On an entirely different note, Massdrop is likely to make short work of turning me into a knife geek pretty quickly.
MooTatersThat function over form mindset is one of my favorite things about Spyderco. I think the standard Delica is a really beautiful knife, because of its uncompromising functionality, and the handle is a part of that.
MooTatersI also agree. And "fiberglass reinforced nylon" is a longer way of saying "plastic", as far as I'm concerned. Which feels flimsy and cheap, no matter its chemistry or high-falutin' name.
That said, if I had to make strong, hard cuts for a long time; and if my only concerns were comfort, avoiding fatigue, and maintaining consistency with the blade, a Spyderco would be my folder of choice. I'd prefer a model larger than the Delica and w/ G10 scales, like a Manix or (probably) a Para 2 (don't know it well enough yet, but seems = or > Manix for ergos and blade geometry), but even with features or dimensions I don't prefer, there's no denying Spyderco knives are like AK-47s, or Bic lighters, or '83 Honda Civics: no-frill designs that do what they're supposed to do and don't need to be babied to keep working.
JonasHeinemanYou might want to consider to order more right away :) And maybe come u with a solution for more of these... (for those who will not be able to get one of the 1000 units).
Dodge223Might be okay for most, although since spyderco allows disassembly in their warranty, and some will do that, I doubt that the coating will withstand the driver twisting it.
JonasHeinemanSo more than 500 people are now on board. Should I bother to join? Wouldn't I be paying for something I might get in a future drop? Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I'm new at this.
gthompsonVery very good question that needs answering actually what happens if i order number 799 out of 1000 ordered will i get my knife /not in the firs 500 that are due to ship 31.10.2018 or when they ship / but maybe in later date or... what how when?
JonasHeinemanMD: PLEASE REPLY ... Apologies if this question has already been answered but, if so, I can't find it. You say:

There are now (WED 04-04) well over 500 ordered. Does that mean that anyone who orders now will not have their knife shipped as part of the first drop on 2018-10-31? If not, when will the above 500 knives ship - and be billed?
Thanks!
VaeronWe'll post the Estimated Ship Date for members in next drop when it happens. It's likely to be after the first orders are fulfilled, but not too much later. I don't know more specifically just yet.
JonasHeinemanI assume thats because they dont know that the Danish knife laws were changed last year, allowing for knifes like this. But who is your carrier? e.g. dhl, UPS and USPS have no problems shipping knives to Denmark
nopunchespulledApart from it being limited thus there will be probably only one last run to round up the amount to 1000 units total, I think it might be closer to the point of time when the production of the first run is completed.... but that is just my guess :)

JonasHeinemanwhere are the knives being produced, what is your labor? where are the supplies to make these knives coming from?
jscrubI believe all Delicas are made in Seki, Japan. I can't imagine it would be any different for the Super Gold model. The Super Gold steel is produced in Takefu, Japan. In terms of the FRN handles, liners, hardware, clip and washers...I have no idea.
JonasHeineman@AveryC with marketing said there would be an update with this drop but I can't find one. Can you or someone please give us some info. Did Spyderco get the SG2 steel? Have they started manufacturing? Is another delay in the future? Thanks for your time.
