Hi everyone, We’re checking in with an update on the Massdrop x Spyderco Delica Super Gold Steel knives. Production has completed and they are now en route to our warehouse. We’re excited to get these out to you soon. We’re also happy to share a few new images below of the Delica and the Endura side-by-side. We’ll be back with another update as soon as the knives arrive at the warehouse!

JaleesaGSo awesome. Thank you, thank you, and whether or not you had a hand in these being ready the first day of February--thank you all the same. This is a perfect example of a maxim that came to me a while ago, and just proves it's truth again and again: happiness is all about the right expectations. Case in point: if it was said the knives were expected to ship "at the end of January" or something like that, a mob of people on here would be all steamed up right now, and I'd yotally be in that group or overwrought dramatists. But the estimate was instead for "the beginning of February" or something like that--very wisely, too; I'd bet that choice of phrasing wasnt just blind luck--and so it's AWESOME! It's literally both those times right now, but because I was thinking and expecting Feb. and not Jan., it feels like winning a prize, or getting an upgrade to first class. If you tell someone you'll cook them up a big, juicy burger with all the fixin's, theyll probably be grateful and happy eating that free, unexpected meal. But tell them youre going to cook a multi-course, formal dinner with a filet of Kobe beef for the main dish, and that very same tasty burger and potato salad become almost an insult. We're all kind of simple like that, like nobody quite matures past the age where they will look wherever the photographer wants because he catches our attention with a squeaky toy. It's ok though, 'cause we're going to have Spyderco sprint runs no one else will have, and one day some Spyder fan will LOSE HIS MIND when he sees your knife; hopefully he's both rich and impulsive. And then you'll just have to decide if you want a bunch of money or the joy of watching a grown man have a toy tantrum. Ooohh, that's going to be tough choice.

JaleesaGGreat news after a long wait. I’m sure Spyderco doesn’t use Smart Post so it should arrive this week and we should be getting our shipping notice very soon. NE:13 - LA:3

JaleesaGSo, um... no offence intended, but what in the world is going on? You said we'd hear from you again when the knives arrived, and going on three weeks it seems that they ought to have arrived, unless they were shipped by traditional Asian junks. Maybe even then. Does no update mean the knives have not made it stateside and/or to Massdrop receiving facilities; or that there was some catastrophic problem detected in the final pre-shipment QC check in Seki City, which had delayed shipment; or has Massdrop perhaps received the knives but has other items prioritized going out, so that these knives will have to wait until there are more resources available for inspection/shipping? Or something else I haven't imagined? Maybe you all have the really nasty, mutant "rhino-fluenza" virus that's laid low nearly every friend and family member I have (it's a hellish mixture of cold and flu symptoms, and produces the extreme discomfort of the flu but with the longevity of a cold; I felt worse a cpl weeks ago than I had in years, and I'm still not totally well)? If you've got them but just can't get them shipped yet, I myself and I think most other people would feel better knowing that. There's always some customer out there who thinks that if it's possible to serve him first then doing literally anything else is unacceptable, but most of us are either decent enough, or have experienced being understaffed and overburdened at work enough to be sympathetic. I'm most concerned at this point that there was a problem with the shipment of the knives to Massdrop, so if we're at least that far along, please let us know and put my mind, at least, to ease somewhat. Otherwise, I begin to imagine pirates and killer typhoons and crooked customs officials intercepting my knife.

SammiI don't think it's "antsy" to expect communications when communications have been promised. We can debate all day about actually delivering the merch, but in the magical age of The Internets, and Outlook Calendar Reminders (or whatever your preferred scheduling/daily planner program), it's stupidly easy to send a quick blast when youve said you will to say, "sorry, still awaiting their arrival", or "we've got them but have to inspect and package them, so I don't have an exact shipping date yet." Obviously, I want to hear "check your in-boxes and let us know if you didn't get the email with your tracking #", but as long as I get some regular updates, esp when the last communication told me to expect one, I'm pretty tolerant of delays. Massdrop, however, suffers from the nearly universal corporate delusion that it is better to ignore customers than admit (unless it's absolutely unavoidable) ignorance, delays, no change to the status quo, that they have only partial info, etc. Although almost any normal human prefers acknowledgement and bad news to being ignored, Massdrop and most other companies behave as if they think maybe if they're real quiet their customers will forget we are awaiting info about a product we want (and long ago paid for).

JaleesaGIf it don't get a tracking number for my order by the end of February........ Another delay / setback. Imagine selling a product and once it sells out telling them hey you'll get it in November oh wait I lied February oh wait um yeah you're not receiving it.

BrewhausSorry, I'm super literal and miss jokes sometimes: you meant Massdrop uses DHL, right? The reason I'm impatient now is because on the last drop I was in, for the Gavko Thresher, it took just over a week for the knives to ship from China to the Massdrop receiving facilities in the US. Granted these Spydercos are coming from Japan rather than China, but you would think that would add, from this moment, three weeks and counting. I wouldn't think so, anyway. But even if it did, I could handle that. What's really pissing me off right now is the total silence on the issue. If it takes an extra three weeks or three months I could live with that. I wouldn't be thrilled to have to wait, but as long as I know what's going on it wouldn't piss me off like I'm pissed off right now to have asked twice for info and been ignored both times. And i only asked because we were supposed to get an update when MD received the knives. So does that mean they haven't received them? If not, why not, when the Thresher took much less time? Once this drop is complete I will have no more outstanding for which I'm waiting on the merchandise to arrive. And I will never again order anything from MD that isnt already made and ready to ship. The "first production perks" offered for signing up during pre-production are nowhere near enough to compensate for the added delays (not necessarily MD's fault) and sub-par communication (entirely their fault).

HokeyVery wise. Here's the trick: if it's something that's already in production, and says "ships in 1-2 days" or "...2-3 days", you're fine--order those with confidence. But do not pay your money for knives or any other MD-made items that are in pre-production. If all goes well it usually takes four to six months, which is a long time to wait but not unreasonable to produce a run of a brand new knife. But of the three knife drops ive been involved with for the pre-production, two--inlcuding this one--have had major delays. I THINK these Spydercos were originally supposed to have been shipped to us sometime in late October, then it was December, then February. We're supposedly still on track to receive them in February, but I'd say the best theyll do now is get them sent before the month is out. And they took payment last April. The other drop was originally estimated to arrive last May, then the confirmed date was June; when July came we were assured they would be ready by "mid-August". Around Labor Day MD finally posted another message to say they'd be shipping in a week or so, and ultimately I ended up with my knife, which had clearly been built in a rush and required significant fixing by me, the last week of September. The quality issues were an aberration: one thing I will say, the MD collaboration knives, made mostly by We Knives, and occasionally by Reate, are very high quality, well-built pieces. For the most part, I have nothing but praise for the quality of the builds, esp considering the prices. Not all, or most, or maybe even any of the delays have been MD's fault. But they have an obligation to provide an reasonably accurate estimate for how long production will take, and they admitted what I'd suspected: that they had been giving much too optimistic estimates. They didn't admit why, but Im sure it's because more people sign up for a drop if the product will arrive sooner. But what has really annoyed me to the point that I will never again get in on a drop for a new product, ever, period, is their lack of communication. You can see up there in Jaleesa's message: "we'll be back with another update as soon as the knives arrive at our warehouse". Well, it usually takes about a week for knives to arrive once they've shipped; here we are at three. What's going on? Who the hell knows? Can't get anyone to answer. How hard would it be to say "nope, haven't arrived yet?" So, yeah...that's been my experience, and like i say, youre fine as long as its not a new product; if it is, dont give them a dime.
