I bought this kb back in Nov/Dec 2021 as an introduction to the HHKB layout. At the time, it was on sale and ~$100 for the kit only, so it wasn't a huge investment. I only started using this as my regular kb at the beginning of the this year.
Pros:
It's a decent kit and really easy to assemble - fortunately, I didn't get any damaged or missing parts. I've only had kbs with plastic cases before, but I'm really enjoying the sound and weight of a metal case. The sound of tactile switch on a kb with a metal case sounds totally different to that of a kb with a plastic case. I find that the led backlighting is much less distracting that per switch leds, so that's a plus for me. It's also really easy to change up the layout using the QMK Configurator and corresponding Toolbox.
One huge con: About 6 months ago, my kb starting becoming unresponsive at random - the rgb lights would either remain on or change to a different color/light pattern, but the keystrokes would not register. Sometimes, unplugging it from my computer & plugging it back in would remedy the problem. Other times, I need to reset it and re-flash it with the QMK toolbox.
Overall: I don't regret buying this kb, but the issue described above is rather inconvenient, especially when my kb becomes unresponsive 30 minutes before I'm about to hop into a technical interview. But when the kb does work (which is the majority of the time), it works well and is fun to type with. It's probably not reliable as a gaming kb though.
I love HHKBs. I own many differnt types / styles (including the Topre OGs of course).
While I love my Tokyo60, "MSRP" is a bit too high. It was a good price when it first came out many years ago, but since then, many better options for similar prices can be had.
For example, I would love to see per-key RGB or wireless.
The integrated mounting system was a nod to the rama m60a; one of the best looking 60%hhkb and still is to this day. But this suffers from hollowness which can be remedied by pcb foam that are sourced from an 3rd party website. I wish droped would sell or include this as a optionable addon as well. The exterior form is timeless looking, it looks best with the acrylic diffuser addon installed.
The Tokyo60 is a great looking HHKB Keyboard with a solid build and nice finish, but it's overpriced for what you get in the box. The acrylic diffuser is an extra add-on unfortunately, and I think it would be a nice touch to have it thrown in with the base kit. The case was also surprisingly lightweight out of the box, leading to a hollow sound profile, and there's no pamphlet supplied with the board telling you the default keymap despite this being targeted as a "beginner" kit. I did the following mods to mine:
- Thin case foam
- acrylic diffuser
-additional weight in the case (I had to cut a slot into the diffuser in order to fit the weight inside, so this mod isn't for someone who might want to sell on the keyboard at a later date)
-tape mod, 2 layers
-PE foam on the PCB
- plate foam (I bought the KBDfans D60 Lite plate foam and it fits perfectly. If you only do one
search
mod to your board, make it this one)
-Durock V2 stabilisers (the supplied stabs are terrible, definitely replace them)
With all that done, the board has a deep, marbly sound profile which I'm very pleased with.
The kit is pretty standard, the PCB is absolutely beautiful. Bought it in Coyote and it's stunning.
Had some issues with some sockets which I had to resolder, and the integrated plate on the numrow was acting a bit weird not registering some switches (Built with Zakus). Overall, recommended if it's on sale
Frankinthecosmosi noticed this issue with keys not regisstering as well and found it was because of the pcb mount placement, there isnt any support on the numrow and when i opened mine i had found that the pcb had actual just warped outward, so i carefully pushed the pcb into the switches and it worked again, although i have never ruined as many switch stems as i have with this pcb, as beautiful as it is, so i think the switches i have in them are whats staying in them hahah
