A thousand dollar DAC, literally the stupidest snake oil I've ever seen.

AstralYup, that's a pretty silly way to spend money. Don't need to spend nearly that much to get measurements way better than human hearing, Although $20k cables are definitely stupider snake oil, at least this DAC measures better than a bunch of cheaper ones, even if it's impossible to hear the difference.

AstralI did a blind test on my DAC and a cheaper one, and I can definitely hear a difference. When my friends come over, I also let them blind test it as well, and nearly everyone can hear a difference.
Obviously there are diminishing returns, but it's up to people to pay what they think it's worth.

KieranLike I said in my reply to Astral, there is a difference. You also need to have really good quality music and a set up in proportion. Like obviously if you have some $300 headphones, you aren't going to hear much of a difference.

The_CobrajThey used HD800's. A headphone which is widely regarded as the best dynamic ever made and has the best detail retrieval of any headphone on the market. If they couldn't hear a difference with these cans then there was no difference.

deniall83well maybe you should buy 2000 dollar headphones and buy a 20 dollar dac? but wouldn't that be silly now.

deniall83lol, I've heard the HD800s, and I don't know why everyone likes them. They sound good. BUT, they make everything sound exactly the same. They aren't neutral at all. So that is why they are a useless headphone for comparing things, if they make everything sound the same. I've extensively auditioned my friends LCD-2s, and I have T1s, and I can hear a difference on my Nad M51 vs Mini Matrix I. And he had the Burson 160D I think, and there was a noticeable difference between that and the Mini Matrix.
The fact that you say it has the best detail retrieval is wrong, because a) electrostatics: Stax b) LCD-X c) T1s
Did that comparison, even say the bitrate of the files they used, or which amplifier they used?

Pretty much sums up what I was saying about T1s being neutral and HD800s making everything sound the same.
I didn't say the HD800s were bad, just that they seem a bit useless to review DACs.

A Step Above Sennheiser HD 600?

Hi, hope the day is treating you well. I am curious what headphones are considered a considerable and worthy step above Sennheiser HD 600? HD 600 are my favorite headphones ever so far (I tried most of the popular options within 500$ USD price range). Something with a neutral signature, considerably more resolving. Would it be Focal Clear? Sennheiser HD 800S?
