Gerry McGinnis -- how about a making a real "mini" -- with a 3-inch or just under blade that's easy to carry and legal in more places; a detent that isn't "tough" and scales that aren't so shiny! A well-priced model like that would fly off your shelves. Thanks for listening.

dtw898Absolutely -- got one as soon as they were available! He's one maker who understood the demand for 3-inch and under folding knives. Thanks!

This folder is nice but too expensive for my wallet. No doubt there are people paying half a grand for a custom knife, just like there are people paying 3 -4 grands for a custom Shirogorov from Russia. End of the day, it's a demand and supply thing. Willing buyer and willing seller

jeaseless. 500$ for something that probably won't leave the shelf and isn't even pretty.

That price is steep! Can get two nice Bemchmade knives for that price. Hard to buy a knife at this price without feeling it in your hand.

Finally got mine today!
This is a knife with a "tough guy" personality. The detent strength is quite strong and it's going to take some technique to flip it open without wearing out the finger. The checkering on the handle is very well-done and can provide a soothing massage if you run your fingers over it. The beauty of having the checkering directly on the titanium handle is that there is no carbon fiber or G10 layer to "chip" off due to some heavy pounding for whatever reason. Therefore, this is a solid folder made of three solid pieces of metal- the blade and the two sides of the titanium handle. In summary, this knife will last a life-time without any non-metal material to break apart from use or accident.
The Spyderco Southard, in comparison, has a "nice guy" personality. The detent strength is "about right" and is friendly with the finger. I could flip the knife multiple times without wearing out the skin on my finger but it would tire my finger if I did too many times.
The G10 Brous Caliber, on the other hand, has a "playful" personality. The detent strength is quite loose in comparison. It is quite easy to flop the flip due to lack of "sudden force" from breaking thru the detent resistance. Thus there are two ways to flip the Brous Caliber and still have fun. One is to push from the "tip" of the flipper button and imagine your finger going forward as you push. It is definitely a different kind of "push" compared to the McGinnis and the Southard. The second way to flip the Caliber is to push the flipper button gently to free the blade from detent and then use the wrist action to "throw" the blade out. I enjoy throwing the blade out 'cause the eventual "click" when the blade locked into position is a very satisfying feeling. It feels almost like the blade is part of you.
Having bought these three folders, I began to understand and appreciate the uniqueness and personality the creators brought to their custom knives.
Cheers!

Many better quality flippers are a little stiff initially, but will loosen up after a few hundred flips. Think of it as a break in period.

DSpeedThanks for the comment. Since this has a titanium frame-lock, the ability for the titanium frame-lock to loosen up is slim since the thick titanium frame has strong memory; however, I'm sure my finger will build up strength and the skin will get toughen after a few hundred flips such that the flipping becomes easier. In other words, the break-in period is actually my finger.
Despite the tough detent, the flipping sensation of a fast release of the blade breaking thru detent is very unique and one-of-a-kind. While I don't flip away like I do with the Brous Caliber, I do enjoy flipping the McGinnis on an occasional basis.
Cheers!
