Oh here we go...
"OMG why no USB-C? FailDrop."
So for the uninitiated, these are custom, hand made cables. Meaning an individual puts them together by hand. USB 3.0 Type-C is a 22-24 pin connector that requires a PCB and controller to interface with a standard 7-lead USB 3.0 cable. The reason you're still going to see keyboards using USB Mini and similar connectors is not only because USB 3.0 isn't a necessary for these devices, but also because it amounts to a 4 pin connector with a 4/5-lead cable.
Until manufacturers come out with an affordable, ready made USB Type-C connector where an individual can just solder up the 7 wires, it isn't feasible for the Do-It-Yourself-er.
CyphreI know someone using those currently for their 2.0 over C cables with a resistor soldered. Having all the pads available means you can use them if you want to do 3.1 or ignore them and just use the ones for 2.0, like my dude does. Plus being one of the very few connectors available to use a proper metal shell instead of a plastic one most have.
T0mb3ryAhhh, nice to see this pic. Makes me know for sure that the original carbon I ordered *does* in fact look more like a dirty / darker orange (or even red) than the actual brighter orange of the carbon caps.
The quality on these cables is amazing. Are there any videos shared that show the manufacturing process, especially any of the hand made parts? I am super curious how that's working...
Did anyone else get a cable with a type C connector? Mine has type C to type C and neither connector will plug into ANY of my type C plugs. It's like it goes half way in and then just stops before it fully seats or snaps into the connection. Really upset right now. I waited a long time for this cable only to have this pretty bizarre problem :(
The connectors aren't damaged either. I'm afraid if I push any harder on the cable it's going to break the socket of whatever I try to plug into.
FastRedPonyCArYep, I was gutted. I got the cable with all the extras and the usb c didn't fit. They offered me a return but I just was too pissed to go all the way into town and waste more time and money sending it back. So I have an expensive useless cable.
Seriously? Massdrop, why the hell would you sell a keyboard with USB C and not support it in any other drops? The K-Type is nice but i can never fully bling it out and im pretty peeved by this.
Typhoon859I mean, it's a cable. It can be used for more than just a keyboard XD, and if it were USB 3.1, it's not like it wouldn't further be backwards compatible.
kick53rv3Don't look at it as complaining. If you are a brand/reseller/manufacturer you should be grateful for prospective customers comments voicing what they want rather than being quiet and walking away.
