I’ll admit I’m not as familiar with this brand as some here but I still would find it hard to believe that in this model they use a chrono grade eta movement and the difference between standard and chrono grade movements is not just the finish maybe this is the bargain of all bargains but it’s still fugly imo
I’m not positive but I would think that this watch probably beats at 21000 not 28000 to achieve that power reserve im sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong
im a big fan of eta movements and I can still get one in a older glycine for under $300 and if I wanted a longer power reserve I would buy Hamilton at this price point better looking better value retention
Love Mido, highly recommend, it's my favorite brand. I have 4 of them, IMHO they are the most underrated Swiss watch manufacturer, even if they are owned by the Swatch Group. I'm partial to the bezel-less designs they produce, particularly the All Dial line. Being part of the Swatch Group, Mido has access to ETA movements and some of them also use (used?) Valjoux 7750 movements. In general, the fit & finish is world class and the anti-reflective coatings are the absolute best I've ever seen - the glass just disappears.
All that said, I don't think this is a great price for this watch. It's about what you'd pay (+/-$80) at an authorized dealer and more than I'd expect on the secondary market. Even so, even at this price, it's an awesome buy for a watch that, from a brand name (Omega, Tag, etc) would be easily four-figures or more for something of equivalent quality (cough, Rolex).
Exactly - Glycine is crap since they were bought out - I have a pre-Invicta Glycine which is 100x better than the current ones .... I also have a crappy current vintage Glycine that I'm temped to just throw out it's so poor.
Not sure why you think Mido has printed dials - all of mine are hand-applied raised markers and other decorations. See https://drop.com/talk/1120/whats-your-favorite-chronograph/2184310
As far as finish, I have a machine shop that does high-end interior parts for car restoration - I know what the techniques are for getting various finishes in metal - it's not rocket science, it's all fairly basic stuff but can be time consuming. Never mind that I've restored a couple of old watches.... Pretty much all of the things you refer to are the result of great marketing, not some sort of special sauce.
But like I said, if it makes you happy, that's what matters. Midos make ME happy because they are 90-95% of the craftsmanship at 1/10th of the price and I really don't care about brand. If I want to wear an indestructible reliable watch, I'll wear my G-Shock or my Sector (which has been through hell & back).
That said, I'm also looking at getting a Panerai because really love the way they look, there is no rational reason to get one other than that. It's basically a piece of jewelry and I am paying for the design.
ckm5My wife was a motorcycle mechanic and worked in a machine shop and we used to fabricate parts for our racing bikes so I get it but I can justify the price point of some luxury watches so long as your not paying near retail i don’t see them as jewelry i can wear my watches for a year or two and get back what I paid for them by the way the difference between the 4 grades of eta is not little swirls
Shocking to think folks would find either example of this watch worth the msrp OR the drop price. Seems to me some are looking at the Secs/Movement section before first evaluating how bloody-ugly the watch is to begin with. Six hundred bucks is too much to pay for an unattractive watch, regardless of what’s under the hood.
JayR278They are both owned by Swatch, so the internals will be largely the same - it really just comes down to which one you like better and is in your budget.
