is it possible to put a double sized spacebar to cover both keys and have one of the switches be null and the other switch register as white space? i really like this keyboard but the double space bar layout is putting me off for some reason.
goldenYou can program them both to send a space character if you want. I don't know if the configuration would accept a one piece space bar keycap, though.
goldenProgramming both to send a space (what Tom.B.Raider said) may result in double presses.
You can fix this in software via autohotkey.
The only way to get a spacebar that spans both of the small ones is to 3D print one that has the correct stem positions.
KennuiThat's what i was afraid of about the space bar which basically means it is a massive pain in the ass. I can't believe there isn't a single spacebar option like the planck keyboards vs the multi key space bar. oh well. might have to sit this one out because of that.
evangscan't we just turn off one of the switches under the space bar and have the other switch be the one that submits the white space input? that seems like it has to make sense. right now the only reason i am not jumping on this is because there is no single spacebar option like the planck drop which gave the option of multi key space or single key space bars for order. i don't think i have access to the three d printer to print a custom cap.
goldenNo, because if you turn over a standard Cherry MX spacebar and look at the alignment of the stems underneath, they won't line up with the split spacebars. This won't work.
goldenYou could always cut the stem off the second switch and only use the stabilisers. I haven't tried this but it probably won't feel as good as a proper spacebar with the actuating switch in the center. But it might be good enough. A single switch isn't worth that much and this is a custom kit.
I'm not sure if the stabilisers need the switch for support, I assume it does. If not, then leave the switch off and only use stabiliser.
KennuiTo further clarify the sarcasm, cutting off the stem does not offer any support for the stabilizer, keycaps need the stem to be kept in place. That's why it makes as much sense as not installing the switch. You're better off reprograming 'enter' as 'space'. Shouldn't make a difference for a programmable keyboard...
Or along the lines of my previous comment, you can just not solder the switch. You can at least reuse it in the future without causing irreparable damage to it.
goldenI know I'm late to comment on this but you can have both be space without any issues. This is how I have the Van R1 configured and I get no double presses or anything. You will seriously regret not getting this keyboard. Again I have the first rev (serial 0003) and everything about it is awesome, from the build quality, custom caps and the overall size I really can't say more good things about it. If you do buy it and just can't get used to it you can always resell it for what you paid for it since these typically don't lose their value.
