Product Description
From Mitchell & Johnson, an exciting new hi-fi company out of London, the JP1 allows you to enjoy the sound of an electrostatic headphone without having to own a specialized electrostatic amplifier. It does this with an electret driver, which works like an electrostatic driver but is permanently charged using a special diaphragm that can store and utilize this charge in everyday use Read More

I got the Mitchell & Johnson GL2 from the last drop, and the sound is absolute crap. It's so bad that it's hard to tell where to start describing it: honky, shrill, dull, nasal, extremely colored, all at the same time. Additionally the sound is very much depending on the seal and seating on your head, this might be the reason for the extreme different descriptions this thing gets in the reviews. All this does not change the tiniest bit during burn in. I do own a lot of high end and medium priced headphones. The GL2 is nowhere near the quality of any of them, the quality is like a $3 piece from the supermarket, total waste of money. The electrostatic (electro"Statz") driver part does absolutely nothing, It's neither audible nor does it contribute anything to the sound during measurements, which I did. A great idea executed in the worst possible way. This thing should not appear on Massdrop at all. If you are looking for good and inexpensive headphones get yourself the Massdrop Hifiman 4XX or the Sennheiser HD58x Jubilee. The 4XX is great as it is, full, clear and transparent, and can be further improved by simple modifications like grid and pad swap, bringing it on par with the big boys. The HD58x has a softer, but clear and precise presentation and combined with the DEKONI Elite Hybrid pads gets a very strong bass range too.

QC as in the capacitors and high/low pass filters could have been broken messing with the tonality of yours. If you got a bad transformer (used as a filter) it could have thoroughly caused a lack of dominance in the estat and/or greatly messed up other things too, also possibly allowing the dynamic to play frequency reserved for the estat.

WolfLordTKDo you already have your's? Try the the 1More Triple Driver Over Ear Headphones, it's price reduced everywhere (e.g. $149 -15% @ https://usa.1more.com/products/tripleoverear) if you like strong bass combined with a great musical and natural sound. Easy to drive too.

Well, seems that's another thing that's not sold, and MD tries to sell it as a last hope for the manufacturer. From my experience NO thing is good when it's cheap, because there should always be sacrifice for quality of some part. Honestly for me M&J look like those (no hate here) [image removed]

An actual review with measurements. Head-Fi reviews are a joke and should never be included in product pages: https://diyaudioheaven.wordpress.com/headphones/measurements/mitchell-johnson-jp1-dj/ These will probably not sound good to most people. If you enjoy detail at all you'll hate them. The treble response is a total joke and makes the electret driver seem pointless. If you enjoy a "warm" sound with recessed vocals you might like them or be able to EQ to a less ridiculous tuning. They are not fully closed and will leak plenty of sound. Also the max power these can handle is ~50mW so if you plug these into an amp watch out. Really easy to kill.

SureSh0tFake leather pads on what's originally 600$? Christ these headphones should default to 100$ and massdrop to lower.

Hi everyone,
This Mitchell & Johnson JP1 is a rebrand of the Verisonix N500. I am currently unaware of any other brands using this design from Verisonix. Anyone else who knows, please feel free to inform us.
See the manufacturer page here: http://www.verisonix.com/n500.html

XephyrothTo my knowledge, it is the opposite: Verisonix is a rebrand of Mitchell & Johnson ... but other than that, yes these are the same headphones.

NorthstarNo, it's created by Verisonix. But Mitchell & Johnson is the consumer-branded version, while Verisonix is the technology-branded version. The proof is here in the Mitchell & Johnson crowdfunding campaign where they make a press release on their partnership. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/214784295/mitchell-and-johnson-electrostatz-headphones/posts/1485378

What is the difference between JP1 and MJ1? I guess JP1s are more comfortable than MJ1? Also, do they sound very different? Does the frequency response of JP1 look like MJ1's?

tad44The JP1 is much more comfortable than the MJ1. They also sound very different. The MJ1 lacks bass and is extremely mid-centric. The JP1 is much more balanced and has a nice bass response. After a pad swap to thicker pads the JP1 sounds a lot more balanced with a better sound stage. The JP1 is better in almost every way compared to the MJ1.

Damn these look awesome.. Are they any good though. Or should I rather spend my money on different Headphones? Are there any headphones out there featuring similar looks? I really like the Black/Metal/Wood combination! ;)

The Mitchell & Johnson version looks better to me. They may have slightly different tunings as well.

jonRockYeah, probably. But the factory just rebrand their product with differet names but the same models, which makes it doesn't look right...

Got my JP1 cans today. Obviously, have not allowed for burn in yet. Currently the sound is a little on the dull side. Not as open as I would like... at least as of yet. Missing highs. Emphasis on lows. Be perfectly still when listening to the JP1 as and contact on the headband or cable will resonate down or up to the ear ups. Don’t expect the lightweight cable to last long. L or R not marked... frustration. Short cable okay for iPhone listening, but audiophiles who want to relax in an easy chair in front of their amp will have to find a cord exstension solution. Ear pads are thin. My closed back $4O Status Audio CB-1 refurbs easily best these in overall sound. I don’t know, this whole JP1 thing is mystifying to me. Original $600 retail? $100 mass drop? Which is the reality? I knew it was a crap shoot so I can’t say I’m disappointed. The electrostatic angle seems more like a marketing ploy. I will continue to burn in and search for equipment in my home that these might work with., otherwise I’ll pass them on to my 13 yo. Someone, tell me I’m wrong...

TheBobfatherI had a different experience. The pads are complete trash though. I just ordered some better pads off of Amazon. The cords are not mark with L nor R because they don't have to be. They can go on either side because the headphones determine the left or right signal.

TheBobfatherLeft and right cable markings don't matter. Just like the Mitchell & Johnson MJ2, the cable runs left and right channels TO BOTH CUPS. Internally the cup is wired to only connect the correct channel. This is why the cables use trs connectors. It is impossible to hook the channels up backwards.

I was really disappointed when I received and first listened to the JP1's. Wasted $109?! Give me (and the cans) a moment. I encountered the same problem as most with the earpads. I ordered immediately the Brainwavz (B00OLKV5LI) pads and it makes an enormous impact in comfort (sound and soundstage - more on this later). In the mean time I "primed" them with about 100 hours of "4k pink noise" from YouTube. What a difference! While I also own a pair of Meze 99 classics (purchased for $309 on Amazon) and the Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 6XX Headphones, I prefer the JP1's. I do not own a headphone amplifier, I'm not a headphone person but I do not want to burden my wife and two boys with unwanted "noise". I drive them from my Onkyo DP-X1 and LG V20 (mostly classical, world and jazz music - yes, I know these are so called DJ headphones but at $109 I said "What the heck!" ) and use at least 16 bit 44.1 khz bit rate through Poweramp (full version) . My home system is a pair of Magnepan 1.7, a REL R205 subwoofer powered by a April Music Aura Note V. 2 sourced from a dedicated music server consisting of a Mac mini, Audirvana with dedicated system and database SSDs. I have no financial or other interests in this matter (I already ordered a second pair from the most recent drop). One thing to note, this are not as easy to drive as the Meze and almost as hard as the 300 Ohm Senn HD 6XX. Maybe the electet-electrostatic diaphragm has lost some of it's charge?! I don't know but these are definitely KEEPERS. Give these a chance and you might end up loving (or hating) them. Do not forget to enjoy the music along! Peace!

Thanks for the advice. I have had the cans hooked up to the pink noise for 2 days now. I could not find the model ear pads from Brainwave. Do they have a name and also a number to ID them??? I think a better cable will help some also.

Not sure I should have pulled the trigger. Can they be as bad as “critics” are saying they are?

TheBobfatherHere in the UK they cost £449 ($570 USD), for the price I paid on Massdrop I don't care if they suck, but from online reviews on Audiophile forums they appear to be very good after a long break-in period. I don't regret this purchase.
