subpar build quality and sound

normally i would write a more in-depth review, but for these i will cut to the chase: the build quality isn't up to snuff: exposed glue where leather meets wood, cheap looking chrome finishes, and a very plastic-y feel to the wood (*is* it even real wood??) make for a very "mom's fake jewelry" aesthetic that may work for some folks, but does not for me. while they're fairly comfortable, the decision to not center the headband attachment on the yokes is *really* weird, and is another design choice that simply doesn't work for me. to my ears, the sound was clear with reasonable extension in both directions, but overall unremarkable. for the money, you can find better.

Ok for the reduced price

I was interested in these because of the electret mid/high unit. Owning a pair of Wharfedale Isodynamic magnetostatic headphones since the late 70’s, it would be nice to be able to compare them. Taking into account my age-related disability to hear the very high frequencies, I liked the quality of the mid/highs. They’re not as detailed as for instance Beyer DT 990 (1st version), but still very nice. They are a lot easier for the amp to drive than the Isodynamics, and spl also is higher. Bass are ‘mwoahhhhh’. They are there, but a bit floppy, lacking precision and articulation. Build quality is mediocre, although the wooden earcups are made well, and overall looks are good. Because of the closed earcups, ‘sweaty ears’ can occur, and after wearing them for an more than an hour they get uncomfortable. Still, I’am not THAT negative about them. I like the concept, soundquality is not high end at all, but ok. For the reduced price they are ok imho.

Worth the money.

I think this is a better product than most here on Drop have said. Few headphones sell for their MSRP. That being said it is a good value. Build quality is reasonable. Ear openings are smallish. It fits snugly. Cables are decent. Wood ear cups are nicely done and I prefer them to plastic. I have also lived with their entry level GL1 and TOL JP1. Drivers are similar but voiced different. Frequency response is different. It is a laid back, reserved, dark sounding headphone. Vocals stand out. It does not sound much different from my AudioQuest NightIOwl headphones. It does not sound like an electrostatic, planer magnetic or Sennhieser all of which I own. One review I read suggested that the M&Js could easily be over driven and burn out the drivers. I wonder if this was a common problem with the negative reviews? There may have been quality control problems also.

These need obscene amounts of burn in. Hundreds of hours at least. Weirdly i was going to leave a terrible review. Even after a hundred hours of burn in the sound stage was very constrained. Even for closed back headphones it was kind of a jumbled mess, like listening to a concern being played in a closet. The good things people talked about, the tight relatively understated bass, and the clear high-mid, high area were present but it wasn't a pleasant listening experience. I found some songs that were fine, but the vast majority of music was largely un-listenable. Unfortunately my sennheisers broke around when I got these, and I didn't have another closed back pair to use at work. While I was shopping I was using these at the office mostly to block out office noise, and just tried not to pay too much attention to them. Then one day I noticed they sounded different. Really different. The sound stage opened up, and while the vocals were still very forward and in-your-face, other intstruments moved back just enough to give some separation. They're still weird headphones, and I don't recommend them as daily drivers. They're simply not general purpose enough to be used for all types of music, but they have very specific strengths, and I've never seen headphones that change more with burn in. I still feel like someone maybe snuck in and swapped my pair out overnight, and if that's the case thanks whoever you are :P

I got the MJ1s, and wow I should have read the reviews. These are hilariously terrible headphones and they have a worse tonal range than my $20 sennheisers. They're super super mid heavy, its kinda strange really they're pretty hard to EQ even. Only reason I don't rate these 1 star is because you can EQ these to sound correct, and they do have an amazing sound stage for closed headphones. But these pale in comparison to my broken ath-m40x's when it comes to absolute sound quality. But hey they look cool I guess...
