From Mitchell & Johnson, an exciting new hi-fi company out of London, the MJ1 and HP1 headphones allow you to enjoy the sound of an electrostatic headphone without having to own a specialized electrostatic amplifier. They do this with an electret driver, which works like an electrostatic driver but is permanently charged using a special diaphragm that can store and utilize this charge in everyday use Read More

Having used these for a couple weeks now. They sound alot better than when they first arrived...no more ear piercing treble and soundstage sounds alot more open...went from " BURN IT WITH FIRE " to " i'm okay with this "
I was not expecting 500$ headphone and I was not surprised with the performance. I'm too old to believe these kind of deals... Many of us came here with the headfonia review. Actually that guy gives the cons and pros of the headphone but kind a hides the cons behind the compliments.
These are not garbage but Its a extreme weirdish torture mid-bright headphone with bass light performance. And other weirdish weird thing about them they have recessed treble in 10khz region. Who ever tuned these thing must be doped.
It needs long time burn in(Min 100 and more).
Build quality is" meh" but ok. All the cables are garbage( coiled one usable) . It looks fine. Some say cups are plastic but I dont think so.. Im comfortable wtih it but I have a weird head-shape so beware of that and I use some sort of headband cushion for headphones.
I threw eveything I have to mj1 but it was hard to enjoy them without proper e.q. I have arcam rhead amp, luxury and precision l3, fiio a5 and few other dap and dacs . And I like mid-centric music(that is why I bought it), my collection is full with anouar brahem and tord gustavsen etc... Actually only source I can listen mj1 without EQ is shozy alien gold. Soft nature of these dap smoothes the harsh mids . But even I use eq with them I cant listen with genres like rock, metal etc..... My only closed cans are th-00 so I dont have any other closed headphones to compare(Im not even going to with my open cans). If you like the look and you re only listening slow smooth things you can buy them(90$ "no more") it gives you good detail with airy presentation but otherwise I strongly suggest go find something else.
My Mj1 setting for eq in neutralizer app.
TLDR: Burned in my pair of Mitchell and Johnson MJ1's for two weeks (around 100 hours) with a little improvement but they still sounds dull and boring.
So to start this I pretty much bought these because they were so cheap and it was a 50/50 shot that they would actually be good. Spoiler alert I still don't like them. Currently I'm comparing them to my Sennheiser HD6XX's and M50x's.
Accessories: To be honest I was very disappointed here. First (and this may be nit picky) the included bag is frankly pathetic. Its a very thin fabric bag that might and I mean might protect them from scratches. In my mind it makes more sense to have a hard case as these headphones are made of woodish material. If you drop these in that dinky little bag they will break no questions asked. The cords are awful as well. I've had better cords on a pair of ear buds than these. On the upside the quarter inch and airplane adapters are nice.
Build: Here again I was disappointed. The headband looks cheap, the ear cups I am sure are just some kind of vinyl covered something (not wood), and the ear pads are criminally uncomfortable. Starting with the headband. The headband its self is fairly comfortable though "metal" clasps on either side of the headband are cheap plastic. My pair of headphones came with a chip on them which is how I know the cups are at the very least not a quality wood. And lastly the pads. Never in my life have I more quickly hated the feel of a pair of pads. The pads are super thin and made of such weak foam that your ears will touch the metal protective sheet behind the pad. That for me makes the headphones painful to wear for any longer then an hour.
Sound: Here is where I was perhaps the most disappointed. Full disclosure I have never tried a real pair of electrostatic headphones before so I don't necessarily have a direct comparison. To my ears the bass is there though not very present at all. Highs are there but only the very lowest end of them. This causes everything to kind of meld into the middle and honestly sound like hot garbage. I put on my girl friends cheaper sony wireless headphones (worth around $150) and those had more highs. Mind you the sony's are literally built for bass, its right there on the packaging. In an effort to improve the sound I have broken these headphones in for 100 hours or more and I intend to keep breaking them in till around the 300 hour mark but i'm not at all hopeful that they will improve.
Conclusion: I basically bought these headphones just for fun. I had some extra cash laying around and I was curious what a $400 pair of headphones sounded like. These have completely missed the mark. The accessories are stupid cheap feeling, the build quality is laughable, and the sound is frankly absolute garbage. I'll give that the sound at lease may get better over time but if I actually paid $400 for these I would be furious. To me that price is borderline a scam. To round it out I came in with really no skin in the game and no prior knowlege of the company, but if someone asked me would you recommend at least the MJ1's. That would be an absolutely no from me. The over all package in my mind is not worth the frankly scandalous amount of money they are charging for them.
Please if you are looking for headphones in the $400 range look elsewhere. These are an absolute waste of money!
ThytonMaximus1 the cables that came with them influence the sound very much, please replace them with better quality ones.
use a good quality dac.
after i let them burn in for more than 100, i bought a little blue tooth receiver, this did the mitchell &johnson mj 1 a lot of good, now it sounds fabulous, open detailed, also the bass is just right,
soif you try that you will listen to a high end pair of headphones, good luck with them
Siep " use a good quality dac" but it uses a cheap BT receiver ( with some cheap low quality dac)… alright … but what should somone expect from someone how can hear cables sound very different.
OK, so i let them burn in for 5 days now. The first day right out of the box it sounded dull, dark en undefined, But right now the sound is cristal clear, stereo image wide and reasonable deep, the bass sounds exactly like it should be, the middle and high frequencies show their electrostatic nature, so sounds really natural and fast also, nothing to complain about. cons, actually only one the cables that the headphone came with, sound really like garbage. rightnow i am playing with a tiny cheap blue tooth receiver, can walk around within 15 meters of the source, so now the mj1 really opened up with the receiver, it can pay really loud without any distortion.
Finally some words about all the negative comments here.anumber of them i donot trust atall, imo they were just written from people that are only trying to destroy this massdrop offer, some are comments from angry teenagers. I advice people o be patient an run them in for minimal of 100 hours, pair it with good quality cables, or likei did go wireless with blue tooth, and you will be rewarded with imo high end sound
Florianskisure … I just wanted to correct this part - > "they are as neutral as it gets"
and there are other (mostly BA IEMs for example the Etymotic ER 4 or Dynamic D for example the akg k 601) headphones in the same budget spectrum that are more neutral than the dt 880.
Got Mine today (Nov 15 > 27 ) so 2 weeks to Israel which is nice..
Honestly I wasn't expecting much from the get go - this drop was a hook for the "Curious" Audiophiles.
TL:DR - If you bought them for more than 50$~ you've been ripped off.
They are great to appreciate what you already have..
From the price drop It seems that they are trying to cut losses but god damn this is an unpolished product:
They are not comfortable - the squeeze alone gave me a headache.
The Cables are OK and at least they are prolonged so they fit my phone though the case (Thick Armour).
The Cups are clearly some kind of plastic and not wood - it can be seen from the logo which seems molded and not cut into.
The Chrome parts are ugly plastic - and the MJ1 on them looks very bad (Ugly Font and looks cheap)
The Sound is Loud but not clear - there is a weird Hiss sound added to the track.
Didn't try it on a DAC or Amp so I might be missing something but my Creative Aurvana Live! for 50$ have clearer and better sound overall.
My advice - package them back and give them to someone for Christmas.
SergeyRomeI agree. These are absolutely terrible headphones. They sound like a pair of $20 no name headphones I have from years ago. Very false advertising.
SergeyRomeOk. So I just got my FiiO E10 (I read here somewhere that a DAC can improve these so got the cheapest decent dac I could find) And I must say that these improved dramatically!
Definitely not 500$ mark, but getting close to the price I've payed. so a Bitter/Sweet drop!
DareToBeYeah I contacted them, but haven't heard back yet. I really want to keep them though because the sound is starting to grow on me and it's getting much better with burn-in. I might just deal with the scratch and cut my losses. Wish Massdrop ordered slightly more than the amount of people that joined the drop so they could offer replacements.
Update: Massdrop gave me $25 back on my purchase since I wanted to keep them. Thank you Massdrop! I may just sand them down and paint them.
