Product Description
From Mitchell & Johnson, an exciting new hi-fi company out of London, the MJ2 allows you to enjoy the sound of an electrostatic headphone without having to own a specialized electrostatic amplifier. It does this with an electret driver, which works like an electrostatic driver but is permanently charged using a special diaphragm that can store and utilize this charge in everyday use Read More

Beautiful sound out of the box and getting incrementally sweeter as they fully break in. It's a delight to use these phones with high quality content ... I've tested with WAV, FLAC and Apple Lossless. All great. I'll be testing with vinyl next.
Only issue I've had was short cable. I popped for $40 for the high-end (relatively high-end?) QED Performance 3.5mm headphone extension cable. I found those online from British audio retailed futureshop. They shipped super fast and there is no audible degradation with the 5m cable.

I think there may be quality issues for those who had a horrible experience. These amazed me. I did purchase a balanced XLR cable and that made a big difference! The bass coming out of these cans were stunning. They NEVER broke or clipped with the deepest bass test. The midrange is crystal clear and the subtle rolloff in the highs made them much more enjoyable. Perhaps these are lifestyle cans with solid bass and mids? All I know is they hold their ground vs my TH900mk2's and Aeon Flows when it comes to bass and overall presence. My experience only.

Out if the box, these headphones were sounding shockingly bad. I instantly regretted my purchase. However, after reading that these needed to be broken in, I left them playing for about 30 hours. It made a world of a difference. As for the sound : I think they sound great if you weren’t expecting electrostatic performance. They are electret hybrids. And for that I think they sound fantastic. I’ve also got AKG K271, Hifiman HE400 and a pair of modded Fostex T50RPs. The MJ2 are not as airy and open as the HE400 and T50RPs but beat them at the bottom end and have a sound stage that is almost as wide. The AKG have more bottom but that is it, otherwise they’re quite far behind. These headphones have there own sound - very musical and convey a lot of atmosphere and emotion. I’ve changed the ear pads to some Brainwavz hybrids , because the original pads are ridiculous. As for overall fit - the headphones are too big. I remedied this with an additional headband. Build quality otherwise is decent. sThey are not perfect, however, with the mods I made I am very happy.

I received mine 4 days ago and after 100 hours of break-in they should have reached their optimum stage. I must say I am very disappointed with the sound performance. The highs are present but not very defined The mids are emphasised but not defined at all. All vocals and instruments are lumped together and there is very little separation at all. It is muddy and like listening to old AM radio via cheap built-in speakers. The lows are decent. Overall, I regret purchasing them. I would have given no star but I had to give at least one star to post this review.

I own a pair of Koss ESP 950 cans, so I know what electrostatic headphones should sound like. When I'm wearing them, the experience is so deeply immersive that I cannot possibly multitask. All I can do is listen to the music. The experience of wearing the MJ2 is nothing like that. After a couple of days of burn-in, they've opened up a bit, but they possess neither the clarity nor the frequency extension of real electrostats. The sound quality in the high and middle registers is decent, but the upper bass is a bit muddy and the bottom rolls off quite steeply. Additional burn-in might provide some marginal improvement, but never enough to sound like real electrostats. Of course, the MJ2 is closed-back, so it cannot be expected to create as wide or deep a sound stage as open-ear cans (although Ultrasone's closed-ear headphones come pretty darn close). Still, there's just no justification for the assertion that they're a less expensive way of getting the electrostatic experience. It would be more accurate to say that these are a more expensive way of getting an experience similar to high quality, closed-back, ortho-dynamic headphones, such as the Audio Technica ATH-50x. To my ears, the AT cans sound better than the far more expensive MJ2.

I think they are crap at any price. I've broken them in (50 plus hours) played through dedicated headphone amp (though obviously these were meant for on the go listening). I HAVE a small melon thus, whomever is complaining that they are too big are obviously suffering with delusion. They sound decent but the inconvenience of their discomfort both in clamping force and the ridiculously uncomfortable earpieces makes them a NOT BUY! Even at the 50 percent off reduced price. BTW, these are an English branded ONLY Chi-Fi set of supposedly portable cans. If your looking for full fledged great sounding on any amp/player/dac combo just go buy HiFiMan 1000 edition X V2. These are end game for 95 percent of audiophiles and the other 5 percent are deluding themselves with "snob" factor if they think they could actually perceive any more than the V2's can produce! Ciao for now!

I think these headphones are very good quality and fun to listen to. Not too analytical but they'll reveal poorly compressed songs right away. I use them through an o2 headphone amp and the sound is great. I'm probably at 50 hours with these and they do sound better with time. The high and mids are a smack in the face, but still controlled. Leaving my ears satisfied instead of destroyed. I think these shine the brightest with high volume. Makes me happy anyway!
Ear pads are soft and comfortable, even with glasses. But my ears touch the headphone so I can't use them for too long. And my ears are pretty narrow - I've got a very big head though.
Price is great for the quality.

After a break in time of 200 hours it was time to listen seriously to the sound on different HP amplifiers. It's a nice sound with a laid back tuning. Not one with a stunning high resolution with accent on every details like my Final Pandora Hope VI. It's produces a lot darker sound as my AKG Q701 but also got a nice 3D sound. I think the balance price (250 $) / quality is fair. It was not were I hoped for thus I sold the MJ2 and hope the buyer is more satisfied with it as I.

They are still in the breakin stage so I may update a little later. So far, I am very pleased with the sound. The base is not quite as rich as I would like but otherwise I like the balance. And, as mentioned, the cord is a bit short to reach my amp but otherwise the fit and finish are fine and the case is great for traveling.
