i bought the MJ1s on the most recent drop and for the price ($90) they were... okay. sound signature was fine but not great. nothing really stood out as unique, exciting, or energetic. or even clinically neutral, for that matter. build quality was subpar. comfortable, but not luxuriously so. the packaging, accessories, fit and finish were way, WAY off what i was expecting for a supposedly $400 retail headphone, even on super sale. for example, both the wooden cups and the metal rails felt and looked plastic-y and cheap, if that makes sense. (i will say the earpads were quite soft and comfortable, though.)
by way of comparison, i also recently bought the master and dynamic MH40, a headphone that actually justifies the $400 price tag. way more energetic, emphasized but clear bass (they aren't studio monitors), great comfort, nice accessory lagniappes, and a gorgeous nearly-completely metal and leather build. granted, i purchased it for half off (so, still twice what i paid for the MJ1s), but i felt like what i got was still a $400 set of cans -- certainly more than double what the MJ1s offer.
TLDR: at least for the MJ1s, but i assume also for the MJ2s, there's absolutely no way they should be listed at $400 or $500 retail. that's just completely absurd, in my opinion. whether they are worth the massdrop sale price is up to the listener, of course. fwiw, i'm not *unhappy* with my purchase, but i'm not particularly impressed. all my other massdrop headphone purchases -- HD6XX, HE4XX, 1000XM2, 1moreTripleOver, etc -- have put a smile on my face and some great sounds in my ears. these (the MJ1s) just made me shrug and think 'meh.'
