From MKM Knives—an esteemed knifemaking collective comprised of Italy’s four leading knifemakers—the Raut is a front flipper with equal parts form and function. Designed by community-loved knifemaker Lucas Burnley, it’s built with a 3.4-inch blade made from some of the best steel on the market: Bohler M390 Read More
Would purchasing this knife be the raut thing to do? Would I raut in hell if I did? Could I sharpen this with a rauter? Front flippers and way less appealing than recurves, for me.
Whose the leader making knives, but not for you and me

State sales tax has started since the beginning of August and makes a big difference. So now I look elsewhere for purchases. I found the carbon fiber model of this for 182.45 with free 2day shipping and know taxes on www.lamnia.com and here it would be 189.00 with 11.81 tax and who knows when it will ship.
Nice looking knife that is reasonably priced, but the front flipper is a no go for me. It is more of a gimmick as it has no advantages to a traditional flipper and creates a slower, awkward opening style that I prefer to avoid.
I wish they would have used the newer model that has both the front and the back flipper. But this is still a big chunk cheaper than the 230-250 bucks they are everywhere else.
It looks like the construction was pretty heavily inspired by the ZT 0393/Hinderer 0392, which is just fantastic. I have one in my pocket right now in fact.
Not terribly thrilled about the 58-60HRC rating, but since M390's performance is as much about user friendliness, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance as it is simple hardness, I bet the edge retention is still respectable. Kizer's M390 is usually in that range and my mini Shoal is holding up great.
Everything looks amazing about this. If the fit and finish is there, then this is a solid piece. I'm not sold on it asthetic Ally, but I'm definitely impressed.
Ok, I give up: what is "Raut" supposed to mean. The only context for the word I'm familiar with is as one of the lower traditional Hindu castes. Specifically a variety of "Shudra", the laborer caste, and whose particular employment may have been as wool workers/weavers? I can't recall; don't quote me on that part. Surely this knife is not named after one of the lower end castes of Vedic Hinduism, right? Of course not, that would be super weird. I could kind of see calling a knife something like "the Brahmin" or "the Kshatriya"--the second-ranked warrior caste--or even naming it after one of the sub-castes within the Kshatriya, like how Raut is a sub-caste of Shudra, but really I think naming knife after any Vedic caste would be odd. And most Americans couldn't pronounce it easily, myself totally included.
So...what the hell is a "raut"?
HatuletohI assume they named it after the mountain in Italy. Wikipedia is a great resource when you have these kind of questions. Have a great day friend.
