Ordering this directly from monoprice is actually cheaper than here. Huh. http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=120&cp_id=12008&cs_id=1200801&p_id=11567&seq=1&format=2
For more discount use "4MP12" as a promo code!

GamuhThanks for this! I love massdrop but what's the point when you can get it cheaper direct from the manufacturer?
$95.76 including shipping to the USA with that code.

GamuhThanks for pointing out the promotion that Monoprice is running right now!
We have talked to our marketing department and they are willing to offer free domestic shipping as a one-time promotion for this drop. All existing orders will not be charged for domestic shipping.

AndrewLekashmanAny chance of getting the price of domestic shipping taken off the international shipping?
PS Even with the code getting it internationally from monoprice is still 120 bucks as they use expedited international shipping, this is great and all since its very fast but it costs nearly $45. Add on 20% tax to that and its very expensive, more than going for a better name brand DAC. This on the other hand is only 132 bucks, a saving of 20 dollars over monoprice.
PPS What are the dimensions of the plug on the device, Is it one unit or a brick with a detachable three prong? I need to know if I should use a US to UK adapter or if I can just get a new power supply easy enough.

AndrewLekashmanInternational shipping.... all the way to Canada for me, is $18.77. That's still crazy! In the beginning, Massdrop had some sick discounts. My bet is that more and more of that discount is going towards hiring more staff? Was massdrop not supposed to be community ran?

GamuhI think MassDrop has turned itself into MatchDrop: Instead of offering stunning prices and beating amazon, now they don't even care to do a quick google to see what others have to offer. When the community find out better deals, they just do a price match so that US buyers can save ~$10 shipping by waiting for weeks and international buyers can save ~$20 not due to their competitive price but because of the cheaper shipping option available. A similar example is the AKG K712 currently going on. MD will sure lose a lot of US buyers who don't mind spending $10 more for much faster shipping and better aftersale services. To international buyers, it's just gonna be a convenient re-shipping site.

dropsFor international buyers its good for products that aren't available, and whats wrong with being a good re-shipper? For people that don't like using Ebay it's great. There is a trend with the deals being a bit less significant lately, but I think that's the nature of the beast. If they only offered things that are massively cheaper then we wouldn't get many deals at all and then people would complain.

warriorscotThe problem is contained in this link here https://www.massdrop.com/how-it-works
"Massdrop takes a group of people that each want to buy the same thing, combines their order, and places that order directly with the manufacturer. As a result, everybody in the group gets the large quantity price while only having to buy one (or two, or ten)."
Massdrop was not a re-shipper, however it seems to be more and more heading that way, and this represents the company doing more shitty price matched drops in order to capitalise on the interest shown, without standing true to what they set out to do.
So long as they continue to offer items that people will buy at very low discount levels, they make money from the patience that people have for the "community" delivery process.

AdrianI'm speaking with my wallet on this one. I've ordered this same item from Monoprice instead. At $6 more, I will have this in my hands in 3-5 business days direct from Monoprice rather than wait the 4 days until this drop is over and then another week or two for Massdrop to send out each individual unit. The savings here are too small to add another 2 weeks of waiting time. It feels like Massdrop should stay focused on providing significant savings for bigger ticket items rather than a couple dollars on these smaller items.

WilsonI am with you Wilson. I grabbed it from Monoprice and paid $9 and it gets here tomorrow. I love massdrop but they seem to be increasing the number of drops instead of waiting until they get a good price.

WilsonI think it is important that these price based decisions are communicated to massdrop so they can make informed decisions. Currently it seems that they are trying to position themselves as a technology reseller. Hopefully this sort of feedback is helpful to the team.

warriorscotWhen vendors subsidize domestic shipping, we require they subsidize international shipping to the same degree.
It's already taken off believe it or not xD

WilsonHi Wilson,
This type of feedback is helpful! We always do our best to keep prices as low as possible and there's two important things to remember when you're looking at the pricing on a particular drop.
1. Vendors decide drop prices.
We always advise vendors to list the lowest price possible but it's their call at the end of the day.
2. Value comes in curation as well as price.
The price Monoprice listed was only a few bucks cheaper, and you're right, delivery is going to take longer from us instead of them. Consider this though, how many people learned about this product thanks to it's Massdrop listing? Monoprice decided to list a cost close to their own in the hopes that people would see the product and go buy it from them instead. We agreed to this drop because this Amp/DAC is a great product and we wanted to bring it to the attention of the Massdrop community. For drops like this, it's not about financial gain, it's about showing our community members a great product.
If you already knew about this product, thanks for bringing your insights! If you didn't and learned about it, that's awesome, glad we could introduce you to a great product! If you found out about it on Massdrop and chose to purchase from Monoprice instead, no worries, we appreciate loyal members but do whatever works best for you.
We're working to make both of these points more clear in the future but hopefully this post helps for now.
Let me know your thoughts,

WillI think you have a really good point regarding the curation aspect. I did not cancel my order even though I could have saved a few bucks because I made a commitment and this community could not be possible without integrity. In retrospect I'm glad I didn't cancel because I am in the group that found out about this product via Massdrop. I wasn't even in the market for a DAC+Amp but learning about the quality of this product and its affordable price made it very attractive. I trust this community, both its operators and its members, so I'm glad to be a part of it and glad I can reap the benefits of a well-selected catalog of products.

WillHi Will, I'm glad that Massdrop is listening to this feedback.
-What is Massdrop's mission? This is copy+pasted from the FAQ page: "Massdrop is a community commerce platform that makes it possible for enthusiast communities to buy together. When multiple people get together and use their combined purchasing power to buy something, it’s called a “drop”. As more people participate in a single drop, the costs are lower for the manufacturer, so the price for everyone is lower."
To me, this sounds like the initial focus was to organize a network of buyers to receive bulk discounts from manufacturers.
-Does this Monoprice drop apply to the mission? I don't think so. I believe the $6 bulk discount received from here versus the manufacturer is inconsequential compared to an additional 2 week delivery period. I understand there is value in Massdrop curating the drops available to the community, but this was not stated as part of the initial mission.
In fact, based on the mission, drops should be "curated" based on user demand and nothing else. If we wanted to buy something like toothpaste with Massdrop to receive a bulk discount, that should be possible. It shouldn't have to be some craft or artisan toothpaste either as I'm sure Colgate sells in bulk as well.
-What does this mean for the future? I suggest Massdrop reflect on its original mission. If there are drops that don't really give us any significant discount, maybe they shouldn't be drops at all. By that notion, this Monoprice drop probably shouldn't have been a drop at all.
If you believe curating to be an equal part of Massdrop's future, let's make that clear to everyone. If that is the case, maybe products such as Schiit's DACs/Amps should be included. They don't give any bulk discounts but they do create quality products that not everyone knows about. Your curating service would certainly introduce it to people who would otherwise not know about it.
Last unrelated thought, there should be some sort of forum to discuss this and not tied to a product. I don't think this drop is the only drop where this applies.

Wilsonyeaaa... i dunno. i've beginning to opt out of most massdrop deals even for items that I want. From what I've seen recently, their prices aren't very competitive anymore. Can often find items priced similarly to their best drop price and usually not saving more than <$5-10 for a 3+ week wait and very iffy buyer protection without any return policy. Shipping fees are usually additional and very expensive compared to other retailers that may often offer free fast shipping, so hard to get onboard with a lot of these drops nowadays.
