Should you be setting the volume knobs at full and controlling the actual volume via interface?

MaikuruTechnically for best audio quality you want the source and carrier at max or near max volume and use the volume control on the last device in the chain (the volume knob at the back of the Monoprice studio monitors), but it's not the easiest way to control volume. I would think most people control the volume by the easiest way. I myself leave my studio monitors (5" Monoprice) volume knob at around 50% and control the volume using my external DAC (NFB-15.32).

Do you need an audio interface (Focusrite / Steinberg / M-Audio) to connect these to a PC?

OrexintI looked into it and you can plug in straight to your pc with a 3.55mm to trs cable but its recommended that you use something like a focusrite if possible, according to a thread on gearslutz

OrexintI would think It more important, to First: By - pass the Headphone Jack, and use a DAC. ( a Digital to Analog Converter) That Plugs into Any spare USB connection, on Your Computer. The DAC's Outputs would then feed a Cleaner and Better Overall Audio Signal, to Your Speakers. As Any Internal Sound Board, is trying to operate in a Very NOISY Environment . Plus, Most Computers skimp on the Quality of Those same Audio "in - ards " ( Cost). Good Luck.

How do these compare to the M-Audio AV 40 that pop up here sometimes? Is that just apples and oranges?

NaderB' AV 40', use a 4 inch (100mm) Mid / Bass driver ..... verses a 5 inch, on the Monoprice ! Probably closer to the M- Audio ' BX 5'. Plus, as described here - Both drivers are "magnetically shielded" . So these Monoprice ' 5 inch ' powered Monitors , are Safe for ANY Audio and Video application. Where is the Vendor, to verify my statements ???

The Monoprice 5" studio monitors seem to be relabeled M-Audio BX5 (old version?) So it seem Monoprice just bought them from the same factory that makes the BX5's for M-Audio. I got the Monoprice 5" about 6 months ago, I was very content with the audio quality.

Tacoboy'M- Audio' speakers are NO more. The Speaker line was sold - off to Monoprice, earlier in the Year ! You can " Google" It. If you care to "fact check". ;) And I agree, These appear to be the same as the " old " M- Audio BX5.
