The year was 1881. The mission was simple: Create a timepiece that would surpass all others in quality. The man behind the mission? Nineteen-year-old Achille Ditesheim, fresh off of training from the Swiss watchmaking school of La Chaux-de-Fonds. In honor of the watchmaking pioneer, Movado is releasing this tribute to his first watch. A dressy piece with a rather unconventional look, the Movado 1881 has long triangular hands and a dial that mimics the shape of the sun and its rays. It has no numerals, only indentations at every second and silver markers at every hour. The date window at 6 o’clock is circular to match the stainless steel case. The main area of focus has to be the large silver dot at 12, which could be a reference to the sun—the hands being the earth that rotates around it. To power the watch, it has an ETA 2824-2 25-jewel movement.
