MD is killing themselves with drops like this.
The people who know how to get the same thing cheaper somewhere else because they know how to do basic searches on popular e-tailers will not buy it, and their opinion of MD will rapidly erode to where they will dismiss most drops and only buy a few things they cannot get in their locale.
The people who dont know how to get the same thing cheaper somewhere else will be unsure about MD but will try it because of positive buzz they may have heard about it and, if MD is lucky, they read the discussions and figure out its not a deal which puts them in the same mental state above.
If they actually make the decision to purchase because they don't read the discussion, they will get ticked off enough after they have bought it that they will probably never buy anything from MD again and bad-mouth MD to everyone they know.
Why not just drop the lowest or 2nd-lowest priced Fluke ?

nikonf5Litteraly me right now, all of what you said... checking the discussion page to see if they are any good or even a deal. And wishing they had a Fluke up for grabs on MD.

nikonf5Seriously, every time I look at a drop the comments say you can get it for cheaper elsewhere with 2-day shipping.

nikonf5I do agree you can often get things cheaper elsewhere, but I don't think that's the point of Massdrop. Isn't the focus supposed to be on being a community of enthusiasts discovering and learning about cool stuff? If that doesn't appeal to folks then don't buy here. Maybe I'm weird, but I also enjoy the delayed gratification.

SaeulfMany of the advertising materials about MD tout MD's ability to get things at near factory price, or at least very low cost. Most enthusiasts have communities in either Reddit or a major forum of that hobby. If the point of Massdrop was to bring communities together, then why push drops on their advert platforms and set goals? Couldn't they just sell at the lowest price to begin with? Even when looking at communities, current drops are always first or above the fold. For the most part, I'm here for the Mech Keys community, because it features a lot of group buys that are unique to the community, as a lot of keyboard enthusiasts don't want to deal with logistics and fulfillment that goes into thousands of orders.

KorikoYeah, unfortunately it is probably very difficult to compete with the shear volume of purchase power major online retailers have. I don't think it's feasible to have numbers large enough to lower prices sufficiently for a lot of people on Massdrop (at least for commonly available products). I think you bring up a good point about unique products being where this model can make the most sense.

nikonf5You understand that MD is a user supply chain system correct? If you want to see better drops add a poll and convince people.
Anyone with a real electrical background will buy a true-RMS meter so this is for the home use that won't actually understand how to use it anyway so a Radio Shack special is just as good.
Fluke makes a great product but it's not something I would ever take to a job site it does to much and the "it grows legs and walks away" factor is to high. Besides the fact that a first/second year journeyman electrician at best would get a $10 tick tester/outlet tester plug combo.
I own a really good Fluke, it never leaves my home testbed. I take crap $20 meters with me everywhere else.
