Actually, the term 4k comes from the presence of 4000 columns(approx) in the resolution( 3840 x 2160 ).
So 1080p IS 2k.

1K is 1*FHD, 2k is (almost) 2*FHD, 4K is 4*FHD. 2K is also called QHD (for Quad HD meaning 4*HD: 2*1280 by 2*720).
