Product Description
The Daily backpack from Mystery Ranch is a solid everyday pack absent of frills. It features a large main compartment with space for your big items, plus a compartment for laptops up to 15 inches Read More
Not about this pack specifically, but this is about the 15th pack I've considered. Airline carry-on maximum dimensions are 22 x 14 x 9. This bag is just three inches over in one dimension. Can no one design a bag to make most use of the airlines allowed space without being an inch or two too large?
If you're looking for absolute max-size carry-on for travel, i.e., comparable to Vanquest Skycap, lots of folks love the relatively new Tortuga Setout. The Osprey Farpoint 40 has some design flaws, but it remains my go-to and I still find it the most comfortable. I'm picky, so I hear you on the 15+ packs, and counting. Good luck finding your match!
Charles19521I also have this pack and it'll easily suit carry on/personal item needs for any airline as the side compression straps can compress the depth of the pack. It's a very versatile pack and i've already used for the work commute, EDC, hiking. biking and rucking with 20-25 lbs (thanks to the load bearing, usable waist strap). This would honestly be my personal item in conjunction with my carry on roller in 99% of my trips.
You'll regret not buying one once these are gone....it's unfortunate that the recent MR urban/commuter options lack many basic features (i.e. Urban Assault lacking exterior bottle holders OR the Streetfighter being WAY too small for practical daily use). I think the Daily is one of the most practical/versatile packs that they've released in recent years as i've found that many of their product lines are TOO purpose specific (and many lack a basic laptop pocket, only water bladder pockets or are seriously lacking in organizational pockets).
Got my MR Daily a few days ago, and I'm loving it. The partitioned three main compartments are versatile, especially the stacked pockets in the full-zip front, and the laptop and main compartments are compressible when not full. The real waist belt is a *big* plus, and equally good is its foldaway design when not needed. My only gripe is that MR repeats the same mistake found on many other brands' packs: why do the lower compression straps wrap *over* the side pockets?!? It can't be that hard to design a pass-through on the inner side of the pockets, so that the straps can compress the pack but not the bottle sleeve. Excepting this design flaw, the Daily is a very comfy, well thought-out pack and I'm surprised it isn't more popular.
StoryvilleWhat are your thoughts on the 420d twill rip nylon over the 500D cordura? I really wish they made this bag in 500d cordura like most of their other packs :(. Also, i read another review that the straps were too soft and sloppy, what are your thoughts?
B_dub_gearTwo weeks in, I like the MR Daily material and might actually prefer it. Tom Bihn uses 420D ripstop, but I can't get on-board with any of their designs-- too business preppy for me. The pack's 420D rip is smoother and slicker than the 500D Cordura on my MR 3-way briefcase. I love the latter, too, but I've found that some kinds of lint/dirt stick to it like gum (airports and airplanes are the worst). So far, the 420D rip attracts *nothing,* which is apparently a big plus of Tom Bihn's 420D. I doubt there will be any durability issues with 420D rip vs 500D Cordura, and aesthetically the twill pattern is subtle but pleasing, nicer than plain-jane black. As for shoulder straps: They're working fine for me; I've not noticed anything overly soft about their padding. The MR Daily won't work for everybody but I'm surprised it wasn't more popular. Glad I got one before they're gone, esp. at this price.
Sorry for not replying sooner-- I don't check in daily to MD!
El-KamoteI’ve had a few of the Rush packs. They’re strong, durable and well built. They’re not for hiking and not comfortable when loaded. More of an office organizer with straps.
MR on the other hand is known for fit and ergonomics.
So it depends on what you’re using it for. Orginazation, the 5.11. Anything involving hiking or being outdoors, the MR hands down.
El-KamoteGoing to have to disagree with the previous opinion, though this is an old post. I have the rush 24 and 72, and the 72 is my military assault pack. I don’t use it for all the frilly office organizer stuff, I literally load it with military gear and carry it around. It’s not for everyone, but it’s definitely as comfortable as my MR 3 Day assault, and I wasn’t impressed with the quality of the most recent generation of MR pack quality (I’ve had an older 3 day assault in the past and it was far more durably made). I’ve had the rush 72 for 5-6 years now, and routinelyload it to over 4 pounds. Can’t recommend them enough.
crimsontongueThx for the heads-up, crimsontongue. I'm happy with my Daily but lots of folks wanted the UA. If anyone else is actually still following this thread, they are now $105 in all four colors: https://huckberry.com/store/mystery-ranch
Interesting functional design, never noticed it on their site before. You can find more detailed photos if you search by "Image." Here are two international sites I found, FYI:

Incidentally, re prior comments, this pack does have YKK zippers and large deep pockets on each side that can hold large Nalgene style water bottles. Shipping +tax add another $14 for me :-( but, at this price, I'm in anyway!
