Product Description
While they look and feel like any classic Zippo, these lighters are designed specifically for lighting pipes. That's thanks to their inner case design, which has a hole cutout in the lighting portion so you can suck the flame into the bowl of your pipe without it bending over the corners and potentially causing damage Read More

Only a noob would use these to light a pipe! Anyone who's ever smoked an actual tobacco pipe, that actually contained pipe tobacco would know better! Real pipe smokers only use wooden matches--or if desperate, butane. These are cigarette lighters, plain and simple, and they've been cigarette lighters since your G-G-Great Grandpa used one the beaches of Normandy. MD calls 'em pipe lighters 'cause A) you're too young to know different and B) so their contribution to your premature exit due to lung cancer won't be so damn obvious. Trust me--if you're putting anything in your mouth that need to be lit (or set on fire), you're on the wrong side of this drop.

Beat me to the punch. Exactly. Wooden match for a pipe or cigar, otherwise you spoil the flavor.

Just don't over fill and let unburnt fluid drip into your bowl. I live in a pretty windy area and have a wife...these are life savers

Don't hold your thumb against the striker while lighting, like the Poor Sap in the picture. You'll find that striker wheel gets rather warm, from being next to a fire. You'll only do that once!

The Zippo fluid in the black can has had the odor tamed somewhat, and is safe for lighting pipes. One advantage: naphtha burns at about 1600 C cooler than butane, (yes, that much!) and that’s better for the tobacco and is less likely to scorch the bowl. Letting it burn for a second or two before applying the flame to the pipe is good advice. I’ve been smoking a pipe for 58 years, smoke mostly English tobaccos, and find the Zippo to be a first-rate lighter. And yes, I just ordered another one to add to my collection. And like all Zippo products, they’re guaranteed for life.

I use zippos all the time to light my pipe just because they don’t blow out as easy when trying to light in wind. Been meaning to pick up an actual pipe zippo for awhile now.

Wow, didn't think I'd see an actual zippo with a marijuana leaf...sure a knock off or one someone has done something to, but directly from zippo...

I am assuming this has the standard lighter fluid Insert? Butane is preferable for cigars and pipes.

Correct, standard rayon batting, on these. Easy to refill, evaporates quickly, smells like naptha, etc, etc.
These work fine for lighting a pipe. As long as you don't badly overfill, and you let them burn for a couple seconds after striking, you're not going to get much, if any, flavour from the naptha. May depend a bit on the fluid you use; Zippo's fluid works great.
I get that a lot of folks prefer butane, but these are wind-resistant. If you smoke a pipe outdoors, it's well worth having one around for times when matches or a butane lighter just aren't cutting it.
The cap on the inner wind-shield is also removable, if you need the fire to go out the top, like a standard Zippo. Just don't try to pop it off while it's hot. And... keep in mind that the giant hole in the side doesn't make them windproof in a vertical orientation.
For what it's worth, you can also send any Zippo in and request a pipe insert; Zippo will send it back with a pipe insert.
