"Made from oil-dyed and waxed 4-ounce cowhide" He really means 4 grams. This guy Nick Mankey is the worst! Do not buy these flimsy straps he makes. I was going to post a picture of my leather on my scale but my scale just broke. 4 grams though is what I got. The skinniest crap piece of leather I have ever gotten.
So I request a return, Nick sends me an email saying "Hi there, I appreciate your message. But it seems that you're a bit misinformed as to what "oz" mean in terms of leather. 3 oz of leather refers to the average thickness of the hide. 3 oz = 1.2 mm in thickness. It has nothing to do with weight. "
Yeah that is definitely false advertisement but I am apparently misinformed about what an ounce is.
An ounce = 28 grams Nick says these are 4 ounces = 112 grams I received 4 grams of leather But I am somehow misinformed. YEAH BY HIS PRODUCT DESCRIPTION! DONOTBUY!

smallbit"My scale just broke."
OK. Did the strap break? You're really concerned about the weight of the leather being off?

smallbitOunces refer to the weight of a square foot of the leather. It is a standard unit in leather work. The strap has to be thin enough to slide under the pins on your watch.

Vintage1982BenzI have a digital scale that I weighed it with but the batteries appear dead now. Was going to provide a picture of it. But I guess I need to get a digital caliper to prove this guy shovels crap leather with a premium stamp.
The strap didn't break because I have not worn it. It is paper thin. Literally I could tear through it very very easily. I would never trust this to hold any of my watches.
@Notsurewhyibother, Nick linked me that exact same chart. Guess I wasn't in on the lingo. Shame on me right? I don't know what an ounce means because some fucks in Texas have a website up. That website must help explanations frequently for Nick. Just sayin.
I will stick with https://www.etsy.com/shop/ManCaveLeather. That dude is a real artist.

NotsurewhyibotherIf this was at home depot, and I didn't have to order it online, at least I could have seen it and felt the low quality before purchase. Such are the pitfalls when buying cheap goods online though eh? Sometimes you win and sometimes you don't.

smallbitWhy did you want a watch strap that weighs 1/4 of a pound?
You must be joking.

GregHouseDon't call me Shirley. Nothing mentioned weighs a quarter pound... I have no idea why you would think that and we all just wasted time reading your comment but somehow 4 idiots upvoted it probably out of spite for me. Whatever... I will explain I guess. I said grams; not ounces. This thing weighs 4 grams. Nobody would wants a qp watch strap, that is ridiculous. The original description for the strap I ordered "Premium Leather: Naturally soft and supple vegetable tanned 2-3 oz leather " was nothing like what I got obviously since what I got weighed a little under 4 grams. I now understand the oz is just a description of the thickness, obviously, but in my original purchase you can see why the wording is a bit confusing. 2 oz of premium leather in a watch strap would be rather nice imo. I digress... I bought the strap under the wrong impression but what I received was not a functional product, rather a super light weight extremely thin seriously fibrous piece of fragile laser etched leather. I do not recommend these straps not because they are not the advertised oz in weight but because they are not thick enough/ good enough leather to hold the buttons in let alone keep a watch on or even ruler measurements accurate due to the stretch factor.
edit: Oh I see he was referring to the original comment and just hadn't read through the conversation yet. Yes in this listing without the understanding that oz is a measurement of thickness, for some god awful reason, people could be confused that they are going to get 4oz of premium leather. But if they read through this they would find out that some leather guys in Texas decided they just didn't like using metric measurements. So here we are.

smallbitNo, Nick is correct. Leather thickness is measured in ounces and DOES NOT equate to weight. Dumb method, but that is what it is.
Leather Buying Guide - Tandy Leather | Tandy Leather Weight/Thickness - Leather is usually measured in terms of ounces. One ounce equals 1/64th of an inch thickness. Thus, a weight of 7 to 8 oz. means the leather is 7/64th to 8/64th of an inch thickness. https://www.tandyleather.com/en/leather-buying-guide.html

KarlitoI am not saying he is incorrect. You missed the point... Except he is a little sneaky for how his amazon is worded which I quoted, see above. And for the type of leather he uses, definitely incorrect about that imo but I do not have a digital caliper. But @ 4 grams it is looking more like 1/64th which is not a functional watch strap. That sort of leather should be used for zipper tails and cheap shoes.

BreBreezeHow am I making a fool of myself when Nick Mankey is the one selling junk scraps of leather like they are premium, new shill number 4?
Created in 2016... when Nick Mankey first sold the ruler strap on here. I am sure he doesn't have 4 shill accounts, maybe 1 isn't him and it was someone like you who just felt the need to read through all of this then take more time and protect Nick Mankey in his quest to rip off the masses? Tell me more about yourself new guy. What are your dreams and aspirations aside from defending Nick Mankey's crap products? Because this being your first post, I have no reference. SHILL

smallbitSo let me get this straight.
You emailed Mr. Mankey and asked about what "4oz" really meant. He answered your question. Other internet references and actual leather workers support what Mr. Mankey told you. Then you decide to insult Mr. Mankey's business and integrity, and insult everyone who interacts with you, including me.
I suggest leaving the keyboard for a while.

GregHouseKind of the start of it? That was the original contact but as mentioned I requested a refund and was given a lesson on why 4 grams is an ok product. 4 grams. It is paper mah dude. This is not a good product. Do you own one or are you just trolling? What made you feel compelled to make this your first post?

Ok, let's all step back from this one. I'm alright with blurring the lines on productive feedback or complaints regarding an item, but draw the line at witch hunting and accusations with no facts to back them up.
I take astroturfing and deceptive business practices very seriously. If any of these accounts are in fact duplicates or show evidence of an attempt to manipulate the conversation, then I will work with the other teams to deal with that accordingly.

GregHouseMaybe I can help clarify things in a shorter version.
TLDR: I bought product on amazon, I didn't understand that "Premium Leather: Naturally soft and supple vegetable tanned 2-3 oz leather " was a measurement of leather thickness and not the actual weight of the leather > I requested refund from Nick > Nick then told me it is supposed to thin > I still want refund because I felt strap was too thin to function and of too low quality leather for how thin it is > Nick wants me to pay for shipping more than 10 bucks > whatever I keep it since that is half the price of a new one and warn the community.

smallbitFrankly a bit afraid to engage with you but here goes. My name is Brad Baren’t. I have never met Nick Maney. I do think he is creative and I applaud anyone briniging creativity to this world. You said your piece. I appreciated the first comment. Instead of continuing to be negative, take that energy and bring a similar creativity to this world. You will certainly be happier and people will respond to you more positively.
