I'm not a professional photographer, but I've been an amateur photographer for decades and have sold a few photos to websites. I used a Pentax Spotmatic back in the days of 35 mm film. When the digital SLR and DSLR cameras became more affordable, I grew partial to Nikon due to their file compression compatibility (as compared to Sony's tendency for proprietary file compression) and because Nikon cameras tend to be compatible with the widest variety of lenses and lens manufacturers. I've tried SLR, DSLR, and mirrorless cameras (I still have a pocket-size mirrorless Canon PowerShot that has been going strong for more than ten years). My preference is DSLR because I've been using that body style and a viewfinder (opposed to an LCD screen) for decades. Personally, a viewfinder allows me to better concentrate on what I'm photographing and it tends to provide a truer representation of how a photo will look when it's printed than do mirrorless cameras (I think the newer mirrorless cameras are catching up in that area). All-in-all, for me it comes down to functionality when making a decision on buying a new camera. I ask myself if I'm after a pocket-sized camera or a standard size camera. With pocket-sized cameras I stick with Canon because they have always been a good bang for the buck. With standard sized cameras I go for SLR or DSLR Nikons for the reasons stated above. Well, that's my input. Take it for what it's worth, which is probably proportional to what it cost. Happy hunting!
