Not a complete noob to cameras, but I've narrowed it down to the J5, A6300 or the g7x. Also looked at the Fuji lower end X series. It would be mainly used for outdoor photos, family and friends candid shots, video. I just really want to get another good camera as I'm tired of relying on smartphone for pics. Last digital cam I bought was a budget P&S probably 6 years ago.
Anyone have any input as to which would be ideal for an all around camera? I know the g7x has a fixed lens but does video well. I'm partial to Sony's image quality /coloring but definitely open to others. My first DSLR was a nikon. Looking to stay below the 700 mark...
Only downfall to having a J5 or Sony etc is having to buy lenses, but maybe the g7x or Sony rx100 would work just as well to start out? Advice appreciated!!

mayorblurpsLet's call a spade a spade. This is a decent price ($420) on a mid level consumer grade mirrorless camera. It still doesn't really stand up to Fuji or Sony's offerings imo, but it's not a bad deal. What makes it most attractive to me is the ability to use it with my other Nikon lenses if I get the f-mount adapter (not included). It's form factor is TINY which makes it a great every day carry camera. And you know the saying; the best camera is the one you have with you. All in all it's not an amazing performer, but it's completely adequate for most things. This is the camera I'd bring on vacation, or a weekend trip out of town, possibly even out to dinner, or keep in the glovebox for those "man I wish I had a camera" moments. One of the biggest drawbacks for me is lack of a hotshoe. I highly doubt I'd ever be doing any low-light shooting indoors, particularly with the included lens, but fill-flash is almost required for things like sunset pictures on your beach trips and I don't think the pop-up flash is completely appropriate for that. It's far too harsh for selfies and doesn't have the power for a distanced family photo. If you aren't committed to swapping lenses with whatever you've currently got and are just starting out then I'd definitely look elsewhere. If you're still stuck on keeping things in the Nikon family, I doubt you'll be too upset with this handsome camera.

ysleeDidn't intentionally exclude them-- just have never owned either so not as familiar. Did see the Lumix LX100 which looks quite nice for the now reduced price. Will take a look at Olympus too

mayorblurpsI'd say the Lumix LX100 definitely wins that shootout, but it'll put you SIGNIFICANTLY closer to your $700 budget cap. At 50% less, the Nikon is still a good value.

paperassgasketYea, fact is, they're all good cameras. They're all capable of good photos.

ysleeAbsolutely, but at this level, I'd say feature set is probably going to be more of a consideration that picture quality.
One thing the Nikon really has going for it is NFC/Wi-Fi connectivity. You can use your smartphone or tablet to connect to the camera. Not only can you send pictures directly to your device from the camera, but you can also use your device to control the camera using Nikon's Wireless Mobile Utility App. https://www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-products/wireless-mobile-utility-app.page

paperassgasketYes, it's a matter of finding the feature set that appeals... though just about all cameras have Wi-fi now, and my experience with the various apps is that the Nikon is kinda the worse ones, together with Canon. Panasonic and Olympus have pretty good apps. Can't really remember if the Fujifilm and Sony are any good. Samsung's one is pretty good too, but yea, they've quit the market now.

mayorblurpsI just got a fujifilm x70 and really enjoy it. Its very compact for a aps-c with a flip around touch screen. The tap to focus is one of my favorite features. It is an old sensor so I'll definitely be upgrading whenever the new version comes out.

mayorblurpsThe best camera for the money is the OMD-EM10II. The ibis is amazing and you can pick up some great lenses for under $200. Buy some great legacy lenses and save even more. With the IBIS and focus peaking, manual lenses work great. I like the nikon 1, but it's dead. If you go that route get the 30-110 and the 10mm lenses. The Sony is probably the most popular way to go, but it's a bit overpriced because of that.

Christop82Thank you for the info! I've had quite a few point and shoot cameras over the years and a Nikon DSLR that I don't use anymore, but for some reason I have always preferred the images that Sony and Canon cameras capture. Not a fangirl of any manufacturer since it's just a hobby but I have been looking hard at the a6000 and 6100. I couldn't go wrong with either the Olympus or the Sony I know, I just haven't owned an Olympus in so long that I'm completely out of the loop with their gear these days. I think even the a5100 would suit my needs for now. I plan to check out local photography shops and actually handle and see these cameras before committing to anything of them. I just know I'm tired of using my smartphone for pics (even though I've gotten some nice ones) and it's time to upgrade...it's been a while since I bought a dedicated camera!

mayorblurpsDon't know if you've looked at the Rx100 series from Sony or not, but that's the camera I keep in my glove compartment when I don't have my a6000 or A7 with me. It's not ILC, but works great.

mayorblurpsI’d personally recommend the Panasonic lumix GX80/85. I have one and it’s genuinely the best camera for the price, has a viewfinder, touchscreen and Interchangeable lenses!
