The whole point of using foil is to provide a cover over the food to keep heat and moisture inside the dish and keep it from burning. Using chainmail defeats this purpose.

foil insulates against radiant heat, and is a barrier to moisture.
chainmail would have a reduced insulation effect.

BenDoverAnother use for tin/aluminum foil is to make hats to keep out signals from our governments. We have seen a lot of that recently. Not sure if this would be an upgrade.
