Is the quality enough to use it as a computer speaker, do you need a separate sound card?

It can be used as a computer DAC (soundcard). I don't think you'd like it as a primary speaker for the computer.

One of the primary drawbacks of my Macbook Pro is the built-in speakers. Volume-wise these are definitely an improvement, if you turn them up to max you can get to uncomfortably loud volumes in front of your computer. It's a pretty neat product, I could see taking one with me while traveling if I wanted to watch something on my laptop at the hotel without using headphones.
Now in terms of quality as in... do they sound as good as full-sized speakers? If they did these would probably be hailed as the next revolutionary product in audio and sell for $1000. Since that's not the case, it's kind of an apples to oranges comparison in terms of use and form factor.
