I called the company that owns NuForce, they said a computer is needed. This is not intended to be run from a phone. This is not a dead end yet though, I am currently looking into a cheap "raspberry pi" with TOSLINK as an option to stream spotify; might work.
[in case anybody is interested]

A good option would be to buy a chromecast audio, it has a TOSLINK/headphone jack combo and would work perfectly with spotify

"Chromecast audio" has a TOSLINK output; it's only $30. I got the chromecast and joined the drop. You can control chromecast streaming services from your android device, perfect for Spotify, TuneIn, Pandora, ect...

Thanks for the reply. I am aware of the wireless solutions (like Apple TV for an iOS device), but was looking for a wired one...
