Man, the aluminum is so nice, but damn it's so expensive
I don't want to hijack this comment section but someone over at reddit sells solid aluminium keycaps (cnc milled) for less than these. (Also available in anodized and with custom engraving).
This may not be on Reddit, but HolyOOPS sells artisan CNC milled aluminum caps
When did you order from him?
I asked if he would do custom orders on the 4th and confirmed what I wanted the day after that.
Due to some delays (he had to rework his setup, the ambient temperature was too high for his anodizing setup, etc.) he finished the keycap a week ago but made a new one last weekend with improved engraving and anodizing and shipped it on Monday (the 26th). It arrived today.
In short: 24 days from asking for a custom to holding it in my own hands, ymmv
I'm not going to post more about this here since this comment section should stay related to the NZCaps Artisans
Salvun's caps look great, I see he does anodising too!
Totoro-chaaannnnn! We need you HolyOops!
So glad I remembered this comment chain.
Here I am to save you all from foolish remarks without finalized numbers.
Salvun released his caps today on KickStarter. He's got caps from $15 to $20 each. Aluminum, copper and brass.
UNFORTUNATELY it's $15 shipping.
So the cap that was supposed to be cheaper than NZcaps actually ends up being the same price or about $5 more.
Salvun caps are machined and look damn fine. And I actually think if he had priced them at $30 and only charged $5 shipping. I probably would never have come back here to post on this topic. But my ego doesn't let me think.
So I own 6 NZcaps. Maybe I'll buy one Salvun cap. 5 cap difference. Sad.
Link for those guys who complained NZcaps cost too much. Well here's your KS caps. Go buy them all. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/652182444/all-metal-keycap-amk
The prices I mentioned (15-16€) were for aluminium keycaps only. Brass and Copper keycaps weren't available at that time. I live in Europe and as such shipping from Salvun to me is a bit cheaper than to the US.
One alumninium keycap would be 26€ shipped (16€ for an anodized one + 10€ shipping*) or 42€ shipped for two.
One NZcaps keycap would've been approx. 25€** without shipping or about 49€** for two, again without shipping and possible import charges.
Please don't get me wrong, I don't want to make the keycaps from NZcaps look worse than they are or something in that manner as I don't own any of them and as thus can't compare those two in terms of quality. I only wanted to mention an alternative which also offers personalization (custom engraving, not included in the base price).
*shipping to Germany
** $27.99 = 24,54€ according to google at the time of writing this
What a great country and beautiful, including the language. Need to go back again. The food...
MassDrop is US based.
Sadly everything has to be shipped.
I'll tell you now, NZcaps can be shipped for under $10. They aren't machined.
Still keeps them in the $30ish range. My point was, Sulvan ends up being about the same or more for US.
