Are the only waterproof shoes the waxed ones?

OddoThey're the only ones that will be water resistant out of the box.
For all the other styles you can always proof them yourself (with oil, spray, many products out there).
Please note that i say water resistant, not waterproof. These are leather, and even when waxed or proofed is important to note that they'll never be 100% waterproof.

RayFThey would be perfectly fine during any virtual SCUBA diving sessions. No problem at all.
