Curious: What precisely justifies this cost compared to other less expensive boots?

Yes, I think it's a case of 'buy what the other guy doesn't have' as a motivator, which is without judgement.
Take the Arthur model (http://www.drmartens.com/us/p/originals-boots-boanil-brush-arthur) of DrM at an MSRP of $250, which is almost in a 'dress-shoe' version of a boot: THE BOOT IS MADE IN DR. MARTENS' ORIGINAL NORTHAMPTONSHIRE FACTORY BY HAND, INCLUDING HAND-POLISHING. Etc etc.

AnentNo doubt that model you listed is a nice boot and damn nice for the price. I would argue Dr Marten can afford to price a boot like that based on how large they are (they are global) but they also have to price based on their competition; in this case I would say competition for goodyear welted boots in England is pretty fierce. In the US Goodyear Welted boots made in the USA with quality leather all run in the 400+ range (for quality firsts) from companies like Wolverine, Red Wing, Alden, Allen Edmonds, Oak Street, Helm, and a couple others I am blanking on at the moment. You can usually find a lot of these (Alden excluded) for much lower prices on closeout/clearance, on ebay/grailed/used market, or factory seconds. But no one has really dropped their pricing on this type of boot to really start any kind of price war so they all seem to start in the 300-400$ range. Part of that, at least for boots that use Horween, is due to the fact that Horween controls the pricing on all their leathers.
So really that was a long winded way of saying it is a branding thing. Horween carries a price (although not all Horween is created equally) and a name/quality recognition, in much the same way as things are in the automatic Watch market. Brands like Rolex and Omega (while exquisitely made) fetch a far greater price than Seiko or Hamilton which are a far greater value.
Personally speaking I have not gotten my hands on a pair of Oak Streets yet but this drop will change that. I will say this about why I think the increased price on certain boots are well worth it; When I got my first pair of Alden boots after wearing a pair of Dr's for a long time I was stunned by the difference in quality. It wasn't even close in terms of build, comfort, leather, etc... Alden was heads and shoulders (in my opinion) the superior boots. Now whether or not a person feels that difference is worth the 4-500& difference is totally subjective. I am very interested to see where these Oak Streets stack up in my collection and I am assuming they will be somewhere around my Wolverine 1000 Mile Evans in terms of quality but I will give my honest opinion.

Oh, also - the OSB guys and I were talking about adding natural roughout suede to the material lineup this year - if you're interested in that, give this post a +1 and I'll see what we can do.

Also does final sale prohibit exchanges/returns of boots with QC issues?

Just a follow up: Does this include construction issues? Like stitching issues for example?

homemade_mayoYes!
Edit: All of the shoes go through extremely strict quality control prior to shipping and will not have any issues relating to them. They are all handmade to order and may have subtle differences, but will absolutely have no construction issues.

I would LOVE to purchase these boots, but I'm extremely nervous as I don't want to risk receiving damaged/discolored boots. Is there truly no exchanged/refund if the product is damaged? Could someone from Massdrop please confirm this?

@TomasV Thanks, that clears it up a little bit. The main concern isn't that the color doesn't quite match the picture, it's that the two boots are actually the same color. There are a few pictures in the comments that show a pair of boots that have a drastic color difference. As long as that situation would fall under the category in which Massdrop/the vendor would help with a refund/exchange, that sounds good to me. Can you confirm? Thanks so much!

BMW_M3Not a problem. If the colors drastically vary from one shoe on the same pair to the other, we would contact the vendor to help us replace/repair that pair.
However it is important to clarify that variation from the photos is 100% to be expected (especially in natural Chromexcel where literally every hide is different). Chromexcel, in general, is going to have some variation.
With all Chromexcel what you will almost always notice is that the sides/quarters of the boot will be darker in color than the vamp. That is because Chromexcel is a pull-up leather, and when the leather is pulled onto the vamp, it 'pulls' the pull-up out - making it lighter in color. The quarters will be tend to look darker, because they are not pulled.
Hope that answer your concerns. Thanks for your interest on this drop!

I don't personally own these boots so I should probably keep my mouth shut, but for the price I would go with a pair of Wolverine 1000 miles, for an extremely comparable boot look and spec-wise, and with the added benefit of a warranty and being able to exchange them if the size is wrong... I'm sorry but selling $350 "custom order" boots online with zero warranty/exchange policy seems like a shitty deal, especially when many people are reporting that their boots have cosmetic defects, mismatched leather colors, or just plain don't fit.

I'm liking the purple boots, but what the heck do I polish them with? There's no saphir greasy leather Purple?

awoodbyThese are work boots, so they won't look bad beat up. :)
As to your question, you can use burgundy polish - Saphir sells it by "Bordeaux", which is no. 8 on their catalogue (just like the number of the color in Horween leathers). You can also use neutral cream, but if using neutral cream I'd personally say just use the Renovateur.
Also, Burgundy / no. 8 looks sick with black distressing, so there's that. It'll also go with the boot aesthetic imo. You can distress the leather a bit by using very sparse amounts of black cream polish or okay amounts of black wax polish.
You can also mix different polishes to get the perfect mix you want. So for instance you might want to apply only Bordeaux at one place, Bordeaux mixed with mahogany in another, Bordeaux + black near edges in larger areas and only black near edges in concentrated areas. I'd say play around until you find what works best for you. Polishes can always be removed. :)

payodpandaI do like playing with polishes! Yes, I have a few pair of vibergs, I'm familiar with the boot aesthetic, just sometimes use some greasy leather in black on the black ones when I get a scrape that pulls the color out too much.
I really like your advice. Mixing polishes can be fun too, redid a female friend's jump combat boots to be about this color actually a few months back. Thanks for all the info!

Look like nice boots but no way I'm paying this much for boots I can't return if they don't fit correctly. For a little bit more I can get boots custom made for my feet.
Also, no warranty? If you don't offer some sort of guarantee that just says to me you don't believe in your own product.

If these are custom would they be able to put a zipper on the sides? That would be awesome!

I passed along the current order as of Saturday, but I don't want to promise that they will be delivered any earlier. It just allowed the guys at OSB to start production this week instead of next week.

I've never bought expensive boots in my life and I've recently been looking at the Wolverine 1000 Mile boots. I've never heard of Oak Street. How do these compare?

These boots are made in the USA from American components. Per NAFTA, you should not be charged duties. You may get dinged for taxes, but not duties.

FYI, I emailed OSB to see if they'd give me an update on the progress of the order:
"We're packing up the order as we speak and we'll be shipping the shoes to Massdrop in the next day or so."
