Typhoon859Had my full home theater setup by onkyo since 2011 and has worked flawlessly since then without any issues and is an incredible system for the money. Just got an upgraded receiver to do 4k and no issues with this one either. Guess its luck of the draw...

Typhoon859I actually disagree with this whole hardheartedly. I've had Sony, Pioneer, Marantz and Onkyo. My Onkyo receivers have been bullet proof, not one has failed and they have been passed to friends who are still using them. Had a little issue with a theater in a box subwoofer but that was addressed by support and hasn't been a problem since.

rockbollocksIn every audio community Onkyo is very well known for having high rate of failure. Obviously there are going to be a lot of people with anecdotal evidence that haven't had issues but they've been widely known for the high failure rate since the 90's if not earlier. I've had 6 Onkyo receivers since the 90's and they have all failed within their first year. I've never had a receiver from another brand fail.

rockbollocksOkay, as opposed to me who has bought 4 generations of their receivers (from lowest to highest end) since 2009, all of which have had MULTIPLE serious failures, coupled with the worst support imaginable (hilariously bad, to the point where I would call and put them on speaker just to show my friends).
The one time I did drive an hour in NYC to have it serviced when it was in warranty, and then drove back to pick it up again, something else failed shortly after, and without anything considered, at that point it was already "outside of its warranty", even though I only used it for about half that time. The other two I've fixed myself (because luckily I'm an audio engineer and know a bit about electrical engineering) only, once again, to have some other part of it fail within a year or so (yes, they were all well ventilated).
My friend, if my anecdotes are not to be believed or otherwise dismissed, there are plenty more which have proven this. Almost every unit dropped to the stars over time because half the reviews turned into 1-star ratings because all of them failed. I couldn't believe they continued on making the same crap across all those generations.
Here's something I've otherwise learned and it's clearly proven to be true across the board. The quality of a product (the quality of how well it's built and its components) almost directly correlates with the full warranty period offered by the manufacturer. They clearly knew what they were selling. That hasn't changed until literally just now with their "RZ" series for literally a decade. Again, congrats on being lucky.

Typhoon859Sir, I never said I dismissed nor disbelieved you, I just disagreed, with some gusto. If it's because I'm lucky, I'm OK with that. Onkyo has a large market share and with a 5-10% failure rate on that market share ...We could go on. Nevertheless, I believe and I appreciate your comment. I just disagree with this one based on my experience. We'll see how it plays out in the long run, I guess. As I have a couple of these units and have since they where well expensive.
Thanks for taking the time to respond.

rockbollocksI didn't say you didn't believe me, but in case, I felt I should comment on it further (beyond my personal experience).
Regarding the official failure rate that may or may not exist, there are different ways of measuring it and you can be certain it's even higher than reported.
The point here would then be, it's not really a matter of agreement or disagreement based on failure for one and no failure for another. Factually speaking, Onkyo historically for a long time was able to sell cheaper units because all the parts in the chain/circuit which wouldn't be listed in the specs they'd skimp out on and otherwise had poor implementation.
Yamaha and Onkyo were like opposites. Yamaha skimped out on the main components and in general had poor implementation when it came to sound, but the things would last forever. Onkyo gave you the best quality sound for the buck, but at all levels, the shit wouldn't last you.
Oh, and hell yeah I know it's expensive. They've robbed me of thousands of dollars.

rockbollocksI can appreciate the fact that in your experience you’ve never had anything go bad, but I can ASSURE you every electronics company has a customer service for a reason, electronics go bad.. some more Than others? Sure.. but you disagreeing with my statement must mean you have your head buried pretty deeply in the sand

Typhoon859Strange, I’ve had nothing but good experiences with a wide variety of Onkyo products over the years. Conversely, it’s the Yamaha stuff that seems to break down over time. Go figure.

DaveinSMOnkyo/Integra has had it's ups and downs over the last twenty odd years. For the most part they've been solid but they had a good 2-3 years in the late 2000's where their HDMI boards failed at an abnormal rate. From what I've read they have rectified this issue but after getting burned on recommends to three friends I am reluctant to mention them anymore. I've had multiple generations of Denon/Marantz and have recommended them to friends, batting a thousand on satisfied customers there.

ElectronicVicesNot really. They've always had reliability issues. http://www.avsforum.com/forum/90-receivers-amps-processors/1652514-onkyo-acknowledges-failed-units-extending-warrranties-until-2018-a.html
They've acknowledged it as well so it's not really anything that needs discussed.
