I really don't understand having a dap. Why not just use a phone with external dac like a dragonfly?

ScareYourPassengerBecause Dragonfly takes USB-A so you need another adaptor for your phone, and honestly there's no point because your phone's DAC is probably gonna be on par with a Dragonfly
ElsieXOXOIt may be the dac or the amp built into the dragonfly but it sounds far better than my iPhone.

ScareYourPassengerA couple reasons. Not saying I endorse or agree with any but logically speaking I can think of:
  • Additional storage to avoid streaming and still have room for all your other things on the phone.
  • Offloading of "on" time to extend battery on all devices.
  • Improved audio performance usually with better chipsets and more power.
  • Headphone jack--which an external dac/amp dongle can also accomplish but with less functionality overall.
  • Sometimes using your phone as an audio player isn't practical because you need it for other things.

ScareYourPassengerIt's a good question it all depends on what type of music you listen to and what type of files you're using. If all you doing is using MP3 files and mostly streaming music from Apple or Amazon etc. then you're right a phone should be fine. However if you're trying to use FLAC or Hi-Res files they take up a lot of memory. Now a lot of the new phones have a slot for a micro card so that would take care of that problem. Still as the other people say you need your phone for a lot of other things. And when you're listening to music do you always want to be interrupted by phone calls or notifications for emails or etc. etc. again it's how much do you listen to music and how important is it to you if a casual listener fine just use the phone. But if you listen to a lot of music have a lot of files and want uninterrupted listening with super high quality. A digital audio player is the way to go. However I would not recommend this one. See my next post to see which ones I would recommend.

ScareYourPassengerIn addition to the other things mentioned, sometimes you want something really small and lightweight (e.g., for exercising) or for dedicated use in a car or workshop.
