How do these compare to the Seiko 5 line of automatics (regularly found more in the $70-80 range)? TIA

PaulAdams11Orient's mostly are hand winding and self winds, Seiko 5's are just self winds

Orient isn't owned by Seiko, but both are majority owned by Epson. And it's purely financial/legal. There isn't much of an operational crossover, except for a few common vendors in their respective supply chains. Think of the Japanese watchmakers like the American version of a co-op.

"Welcome to watches"? I've been wearing one every day for 36 years... But whatever. The message was intended for you; I think you misstated the ownership linkage between Orient and Seiko. Looks like you sorted it out properly in your follow-up.

I'm a "Seikosexual" through and through. I've had higher end pieces, like my Dad's Rolex Sea Dweller, but I think there's a "diminishing return" after about $500 that I don't care to spend. Seems like that extra money indeed does buy quality, but not as much, if that makes sense (ergo, 'law of diminishing returns'). I'm the same way with audio and photography gear. For me, Seiko is the perfect confluence between price and value. So most of my pieces these days are Seiko, or their close cousin, Orient. I also have a Wenger Terragraph (beater watch if there ever was one), Bulova Lunar Pilot, and a few others I can't remember off the top of my head. My box is full at ten pieces, and I promise to myself I'll never overfill it. So I'm actually looking to offload a couple so I can make a few changes. I mostly buy mechanicals, but I think quartz is useful in many contexts, so I have an even representation of both. Current target is a Seiko hi-beat from my birth year, but they are either over-priced or in awful condition. Or, the eBay seller logs in with a fake buyer account and jacks up the price 2 minutes before the auction is over... I hate that crap. Yeah, dad gave me my first Casio digital watch when I was 10, and I haven't looked back... Anyway what's your story

Man, I don't even consider Grand Seiko to be Seiko. It's a class all on its own. I don't believe in "grail watches," but if you forced me to, it would be a GS. Just can't justify spending that much. Tried one on once, and what I loved about it was the way the light found every reflective surface and "prism-ed" it back into my eye. So it was like wearing a fine-cut diamond. And that spring drive... engineering elegance at its quintessence! I've been tempted to snag the SNZG15, but went with the SNKN33 instead (same thing but smaller). I think the dial diameter is what scared me. I like that < 40mm range a lot. But my Bulova and a couple Seiko divers go over 40mm, but I think for a diver or chrono it is okay to be that big. Though nothing fancy, I'm wearing my SNK789 (very cool watch! Doesn't get much love in the forums though...) today on a saddle brown Barton strap. Simple, cheap, and good looking. (Just don't keep the stock bracelet - it's junk). Need to swap the hardlex for flat sapphire one of these days. I have two Seiko 5s and they get more wear than my SARB or Presage combined. Great little watches that aren't pretentious, and don't sacrifice accuracy or even looks. I know Reddit's 'watchescirclejerk' is full of Seiko 5 jokes, and I join in on those, but I really do love that line. I paid $69 for my SNKN33 and $58 for my SNK789, both new. So yeah, I love the affordables!
