Product Description
Like a vintage astronomical clock, the Orient Sun & Moon automatic watch has every bit of old-world charm you could ask for. The main attraction is the sun and moon complication between 5 and 6 o’clock, which has been shifted from previous versions to concentrate on the left two thirds of the dial Read More

Not my style but I'll be damned if I don't have to point out the frankly obscene amount of watch you get for your money from Orient these days. I wish China would stop being such a bastard of a country on the world scale, because their capacity for making some truly wonderful, unique things is gravely underrated.

Orient is owned by Epson, which is part of the same conglomerate that owns Seiko. Now, they do have manufacturing facilities in Maylasia and other southeastern Asian countries, which is why you’ll see collectors looking for domestic market Made in Japan watches. It is entirely possible that parts of the case or strap are made outside Japan, but to the best of my knowledge nothing is made or assembled in China, Taiwan or Hong Kong. Before being acquired by Epson, Orient was totally in house. Looking at the back of the case, it does not say ‘made in japan’ and is marked as ‘movement japan’ so I suspect case/original strap is made elsewhere with final assembly in one of Epson (read Seiko) factories.

I like this ⌚ a lot. Indeed, I own the third & fourth versions. Check this guide for all versions https://wristocracy.com/orient-sun-and-moon-guide/ The dial has several levels & textures making it interesting to 👁 at. The part I dislike the most is the day subsphere because Tuesday is misaligned. Also, there's and additional marker between each day because this movement can handle the names of the days in 2️⃣ different languages.

Many may confuse the 🌞&🌚 indicator with a 🌙 phase which will make this ⌚ appear to have a higher level complication. But Orient didn't use the traditional cutout for the 🌙 phase in order to avoid confusion. However, they used that cutout for the date complication which I 🗯 is a little more recessed that I would have preferred 🤷🏻‍♂️ Orient is certainly not known for using great straps so you should change it for something nicer. This ⌚ really deserves it. Quality & 👀 are perfectly fine and I usually get compliments about the ⌚ You can't go wrong with this one ✅

Cartier for the common man? Sounds like Socialism!

RayFBut of course, comrade. Even the common man can have expensive watch in communist America. All jokes aside, it is true. The common man can have a several thousand dollar watch if he wishes to prioritize. I can only speak for myself but I realized that cooking at home, cutting the cord to cable tv/netflix/etc, and curtailing my other unnecessary retail spending left enough over each month to provide quite a nice watch budget annually. If you couple that by purchasing preowned watches at the bottom of the depreciation curve or new watches that hold or increase value, then you end up with a very nice esoteric store of wealth (not an investment) that is fairly liquid and easily transportable.

I purchased the white dial version from US Amazon in Dec 2018 for $207.25 Currently the black dial version is available on US Amazon prime for $212.15 This is version 3 of the series. Version 4 has Arabic instead of Roman numerals. Version 1 & 2 are non hacking. Accuracy has been great. +4-6 spd over the past 2 years. The leather band is horrific and the deployent clasp is atrocious. I bought a $20 Barton leather band as a replacement. The dial is sandwich construction. The subdials and cutouts are all different depths. There are different patterns in the subdials compared to the main and outer portions of the actual dial. Everything is printed on the dial and looks fairly good. @seiko_killer No idea why they do the date window that way. I am not sure of any function it has asides from design, but yes there are many watches that do this, even at the high end. JLC Polaris has a few models like it, as does IWC. I begrudgingly admit that non-watch snob me actually enjoys this watch. I even wore it the other day to give my Rolexes a rest, and it serves as a nice larger size dress watch. Lug to lug is under 50mm but it is a bit chunky at around 14 mm thick. If you have a wrist size above 14.5 cm you should be able to wear it no problem. If you like the design of this watch, you should check out the Cartier Ronde lineup on the grey and pre-owned market. The Ronde lineup was NOT well received, so there are bargains to be had. Brand new grey market models can be had for under $3k and there are pre-owned models going for around $1,500. If you have no other dress watches, you could do worse. If you want a really nice dress watch on the cheap, save up for the Cartier or something at a similar price level.

Does anybody have any info about why some date windows show 3 dates? I have seen it on other models from other brands as well. To me, it is an eyesore. I'm not an idiot, I know which number comes before and after today's date, so why show it like this? Was it some classic watch from back in the day, and now some models try to copy that, for nostalgia?

The copy states that this watch is 21 jewels, but the movement (F6B24) is a 22 jewel movement. Same movement used in the Ray II and Mako II.
