Since ordering this watch, I’ve done some after the fact research on this model.
Looking at the Gen I, I am pleased to see how the Gen II swapped the (in my opinion) oversized Arabic numerals for index markers. The markers are slim, polished and beveled not only along their length, but at the outer ends, the 12 index having a wider double bevel shape. These mimic the hour and minute hands. I confess the contrasting reflections on the polished hands in the pictures were what first caught my attention. Again, this bevel is repeated on the chapter ring. The beveled ring gives the face a sense of depth and in my opinion highlights the minute marks all around.
Orient also made the brilliant decision to give the Gen II a sapphire crystal on both sides. This feature on what Drop offers for $99 is remarkable.
Seeing pictures of and reading descriptions of the Gen III make me so relieved that I have this chance to get the Gen II. The only thing that I find appealing in the Gen III is the addition of hand winding to the automatic movement. All the esthetic features I find appealing in the Gen II are gone.
Gen III flattens and de-emphasizes the bevels all over. The index markers are flattened and lose the end bevels. The chapter ring is flat with the dial. The hands still have some of the bevel but are narrower and spear tip shaped rather than a continuously increasing widening to the center. More “dressy” and perhaps elegant looking, but less appealing to me. Worst of all, they revert to mineral crystals.
I received my shipment notification yesterday and am anxiously waiting for my watch. I hope the real thing matches the style and appearance of the pictures. I intend to add a review once I have spent some time (see what I did there?) with my new acquisition.
Just starting to build a more respectable collection as my second (and last) child is in the last half of her junior year and I have tuition set aside for her last year. Time to start splurging.
Not that $99 is a splurge, but it is a ridiculously good price for a very attractive automatic watch with a sapphire crystal. I find I prefer the simpler, clean styles without a lot of complications. No chronographs (too small for me to read with these eyes), fiver bezels (not a diver) or fancy dials or moon phases. This one looks simple, elegant, functional.
I’m very drawn to the contrast of the polished hands and markers against the black dial, but most of what I currently have are darker colored dials, so I’m thinking hard about the white dial. Not liking the brown strap, though considering the low price of the watch I can buy a black strap separately and still have a good deal.
Decisions, decisions, decisions...
MarPablThanks for the recommendation. I finally decided on the white dial and yes, I do plan to buy a black strap with white stitching and a silver buckle. I think that combo will make for a very nice looking everyday wearer
To me this is, and by far, the best vfm MD has been offering lately. Forget that Fortuna non-chrono Chronométrie if you though it was a good deal, this one is the real deal!
phoenixsongSame here. Really love the look of this watch and that it has sapphire crystal. Totally pissed that Drop keep telling me about it but won't ship to me. :-(
Yes I can see that the GS logo would be polarising. It is curious that they adopted a gothic font, personally I would love to see one with Japanese characters.
MarPablFor nearly same money can get a Bambino Version 4. Newer hacking movement. This Drop model is priced near same on Amazon. Not much of a drop. I passed on this one.
I ordered one and a few hours later was insta-refunded because they oversold it.
Well, Massdrop's sheer inability to conduct basic inventory management is going to make me think twice about ordering again.
