If these were about a quarter of this price I'd consider it. No way am I going to spend over a grand on a corrugated plastic boat. I bought 2 rotomold plastic boats for less than half of this. Corrugated plastic isn't anywhere near as durable as rotomolded plastic. $100 just isn't enough off of the ludicrous price of this boat to make it worth buying.

kevinriversThing is, it is for me, I've wanted one since I saw it, but the price is too high.

aumryshIf you feel the price is too high, then it really isn't for you.

kevinriversI hope enough people get it so you can get the price drop. I'm not criticizing your decision to buy it. I'm criticizing the product's cost, it just seems like too much markup to me considering the price of the raw materials. On Shark Tank the guys said it cost them $505 to make each one, and they could get the cost down to $350 within a year.

aumryshYes, that is what a company that desires to be profitable should strive to achieve. The price is what the market will bear. Many items carry a big margin, the majority of which you don't know about.
My intention isn't to defend the product because I bought it, I merely want to point out to you that the product isn't really for you.
I can't store a normal kayak, I simply don't have the space. So immediately this product speaks to me, from there it looks well made which is important to me. For me, the value is there and I have the means to buy it.
The benefits of the product outweigh the expense and good on them for attempting to be profitable. I don't mind supporting a well made, beautiful and functional (for me) product. You do, hence why it isn't for you which is fine. But playing the "overpriced" card is pointless,

kevinriversYeah, it is pretty cool how you can fold it up, also the Oru does look very well made. I've seen some plans online for building one of your own, but obviously the quality wouldn't be anywhere near this one. Hope your kayak serves you well. Doesn't matter what it is or how much it costs, the more kayakers the better :)

aumryshThe problem with companies revealing their cost margins is exactly the trap you have fallen into. Material costs don't include the fabrication or the overhead the business has to stay afloat. I get it, I used to be in the same boat as you but a 150%-200% markup for a specialty item is very normal. A glock pistol is about $80-100 in materials yet it costs $500-600.
